Yasuhide Kobashi: A Japanese/American printmaker
and sculptor, Yasuhide Kobashi was born in the Japanese city of Kojima,
in Okayama prefecture. He studied printmaking techniques under the Sosaku
Hanga master, Unichi Hiratsuka, at the Kyoto College of Crafts and Textiles
and graduated in 1955. |
|
Yasuhide Kobashi moved to the United States in 1965 and created
some of his early prints in New York at the Pratt Graphic Art Center. He
became a full member of the Society of Independent Artists and regularly
exhibited with this institution. Kobashi has also illustrated several books,
including, The Seasons of Time; Tanka Poetry of Ancient Japan (1968). Today
the art of Yasuhide Kobashi is included in such major collections as the
Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Cleveland Museum of Art. |
|
Monotype (Monoprint): First used by Castiglione in the 17th Century, the monotype lays
a claim to both printmaking and painting. The method produces only a single
impression by using pressure to transfer an image painted on one surface (usually
glass) to another (usually paper). Degas is considered by many to be the master
of this technique. Altogether Dega created over one hundred monotypes. |
