Note:	Walther Klemm: This distinguished painter and woodcut artist holds an important place in the history of twentieth century German art. Beginning his artistic career with highly finished, realistic subjects, Walther Klemm's technique gradually broadened out to embrace a unique type of black and white impressionism, which was much more lyrical and flowing than the woodcuts of his expressionist contemporaries. By the time Spielende Esel was made, Walther Klemm was at the height of his powers. The woodcut, with its graceful lines and sharp contrasts of black and white is somewhat reminiscent of the work of Franz Marc. Both German artists shared an almost mystical reverence for animal life.
	Spielende Esel was published as an individual woodcut. Klemm also created woodcuts for some of the finest illustrated books of the period. The museums of Leipzig, Berlin, Augsbourg and Prague own examples of Klemm's outstanding woodcuts.
	Vervielfaltigende Kunst: During the early twentieth century leading art journals around the world published original etchings, lithographs and woodcuts on a regular basis. Some of the greatest prints from this vital era were commissioned and published by "The Studio", in London, "Pan", in Germany, "The Print Connoisseur", in America and "Vervielfaltigende Kunst", in Vienna.
	"Vervielfaltigende Kunst" issued it first original etching in 1871. During the following sixty years it published masterworks by Austrian, German, Czech, Swiss, French, Dutch and English artists. More internationally focused and less conservative than most of its rival publishers, "Vervielfaltigende Kunst" became a spearhead for the vibrant experiments of Symbolist, Expressionist and Secessionist artists during the initial decades of the twentieth century. Also, it superb printing techniques were second to none. As a result, "Vervielfaltigende Kunst" is now regarded as a most vital fine art publisher of its day and individual prints from this publication are eagerly sought after on the international market.

Condition:	Spielende Esel was printed on wove paper and with wide margins as published by Vervielfaltigende Kunst in 1919. Signed in the block with Walther Klemm's monogramme. A strongly printed impression and in excellent condition throughout. Spielende Esel is a classic example of the woodcut art of the great German master.
