Thomas Kitchin, original engraving, "A General Map of The East Indies from the Latest Surveys" is a fine example of an original 18th century map. Despite the large geographical area this map, the detailing and delineation is superb. The East Indian Islands were juist beginning to be thoroughly explored at this time and many kingdoms (such as Borneo) were subjects of great speculation. "A General Map of The East Indies" is an original hand-coloured engraving printed upon fine, hand-made eighteenth century laid paper and with full margins as published by the British Cartagrapher, Thomas Kitchin in London in 1762. |

As a cartographer, Kitchen is highly respected for his set of English county maps (issued in 1764) and his 1773 General Atlas of the World. Of equal importance, however, are the many maps he created for individual commissions, such as books of travel and exploration. The larger maps, such as this original example entitled.
