Vincas Kisarauskas's Ex-Libris Vitolis Vengris is an original color linocut printed upon mulberry paper and with full margins as created by the artist around 1971. This impression is signed in the block with the artist’s monogram to the lower left. Perhaps more than any other artist from Lithuania, Kisarauskas was responsible for shifting his country’s art and aesthetics away from rigid Soviet formalities to more modern elements and concerns. Most of the artist’s ex libris linocut prints were made during the early 1970’s. After this time his ex libris designs were executed mainly in etching, aquatint or engraving. Vitolis Vengris was perhaps a close friend of the artist as it is known that Kisarauskas created at least three bookplates for him. This is a fine, original example of the ex-libris art created by the twentieth century Lithuanian artist, Vincas Kisarauskas. |

Note: | Vincas Kisarauskas: A prominent, modernist Lithuanian artist, Vincas Kisarauskas first studied ceramics at the Telsial Trade School of Applied Arts. He then enrolled in the Textile Department of the Vilnius Art Institute. In the following year he transferred to the Institute’s Painting Department, graduating in 1959. Kisarauskas’s first one man exhibition took place at the Writers’ Union Club, Vilnius, in 1961. Shortly thereafter the exhibition was shut down by Soviet authorities. From then on the art Vincas Kisarauskas (and that of his artist wife, Saule Kisarauskiene) was subject to consistent censorship. In 1963, for example, the KGB recorded that Kisarauskas’s work had ‘a negative influence on young people’, most specifically, art students. |
Thus, until the fall of the Soviet Union, the art of Vincas Kisarauskas, was only available to small, informal groups of artists, writers and patrons in his native Lithuania. His art, however, gained a much stronger reputation in the West, mainly through such avenues as international exhibitions and congresses of ex-libris bookplates, and through his paintings and set designs.
Shortly after Vincas Kisarauskas passed away at the age of fifty-four the National Gallery of Art in Vilnius, Lithuania launched a major retrospective of his art entitled, “Greeting the Time.” Such major Lithuanian institutions as the Siauliai Ausros Museum and the National Gallery of Art include examples of the work of Vincas Kisarauskas in their permanent collections.
A Note on Ex Libris Art: Ex-Libris woodcuts, wood engravings and etchings have their beginnings as far back as the mid fifteenth century. Their function was initially quite utilitarian as plates used to signify the ownership of books. As private libraries and their owners gained more wealth and prestige, however, so did their ex-libris bookplates. Pictorial imagery became as important as the wording and the finished work of art often came to stand as an owner’s claim to fame. Before long famous artists were commissioned by wealthy collectors to create their ex libris designs and during the centuries such great talents as Durer, Holbein, Manet, Toulouse-Lautrec and Rockwell Kent all contributed significantly to this great genre.
