Michael Kirk's original aquatint, "Doorway #5" was created by the American artist for a portfolio entitled, Doorways. Here, the artist explores the interplay of shape, light and texture with such an exceptional force and skill that the entrance of this neglected shop seems to come to life, ready to tell its story. This original artist proof impression is printed upon pure rag paper with the 'Arches France' watermark and with full, deckled margins as published in 1975. It is signed, dated and annotated by the artist in pencil along the lower margin. "Doorway #5" represents a prime, original example of the graphic art of Michael Kirk. |

Note: | Michael Kirk: A contemporary American painter and printmaker, Michael Kirk received his Master of Fine Art degree from the Pratt Institute, New York. Shortly thereafter he accepted an artist-in-residence award at Cameret, France. His art has been exhibited throughout the United States and at international exhibitions such as Murske Graphica, Oslo. Michael Kirk is currently on the faculty of Parsons School of Design, New York. The prestigious Museum of Modern Art in New York lists his Doorway aquatints in its permanent collection. |
In 1975 Michael Kirk created a portfolio of large, original aquatints entitled, Doorways. Utilizing doors, both open and closed, as a compelling theme, the series explored the imagery of a portion of a run-down New York street. Doorway numbers such as 686, 688 and 696 indicate that these entrances and exits were in close proximity. Yet the artist brilliantly creates a form of life in each individual scene by focusing upon the random myriad of objects and elements provided by the passage of time. There may be ghosts inhabiting these doorways.
It is possible that Michael Kirk created these most interesting prints at the Pratt Graphics Center, New York at about the time he received his degree from the Pratt Institute. As this is an artist proof impression it is presently not known was the actual edition is. In all probability the edition was quite small.
