Michael Kirk's original aquatint, "Doorway #2" was created in 1975 for a portfolio entitled, Doorways. The compelling theme in this series explored the imagery of a portion of a run-down New York street. Judging by the display windows on either side of this particular doorway, it is the entrance to an old New York shop. There are no numbers visible, it looks dark and menacing, yet the window display is not barren of objects. Is it possible something or someone is lurking behind that closed door? Michael Kirk has most certainly captured the eerie atmosphere in this superb aquatint. This original artist proof impression is printed upon pure rag paper with the 'Arches France' watermark and with full, deckled margins as published at the date stated above. It is signed, dated and annotated by Kirk in pencil along the lower margin. "Doorway #2" is a fine, original example of the graphic art created by the American artist, Michael Kirk. |

In 1975 Michael Kirk created a portfolio of large, original aquatints entitled, Doorways. Utilizing doors, both open and closed, as a compelling theme, the series explored the imagery of a portion of a run-down New York street. Doorway numbers such as 686, 688 and 696 indicate that these entrances and exits were in close proximity. Yet the artist brilliantly creates a form of life in each individual scene by focusing upon the random myriad of objects and elements provided by the passage of time. There may be ghosts inhabiting these doorways.
It is possible that Michael Kirk created these most interesting prints at the Pratt Graphics Center, New York at about the time he received his degree from the Pratt Institute. As this is an artist proof impression it is presently not known was the actual edition is. In all probability the edition was quite small.
