Johannes Kip: One of England's finest topographical engravers of the late 17th and early 18th centuries, Johannes Kip first studied and worked in his native Holland until moving permanently to London after the revolution of 1688. Johannes Kip created a number of natural history engravings and portraits but today he is almost exclusively sought after for his large engravings of England's most famous homes and estates.
Source: Britannia Illustrata was published annually in London from 1707 to 1722. Each issue contained several large, fold-out plates, such as this original example of "Knowle in The Parish of Seven Oaks in Kent...". Almost all of the art was designed by Leonard Knyff (another Dutch born artist working in England) and engraved by Johannes Kip. These are considered to be among the most valuable images of early eighteenth century British topographical and architectural art as they clearly delineate not only the buildings but the entire estates. In Knowle of the Parish of Sevenoaks in Kent, for example the entire orchards, gardens and other details are depicted with great accuracy. Sevenoaks was the mansion house of Charles Sackville, Baron Buckhurst and the Earl of Dorset (1536-1608).
