Bartholomaus Kilian: In the second half of the seventeenth
century the portrait engraving held one of the highest position of any
art form. Rendering the human likeness with the meticulous and complex
use of the engraved line attracted the greatest masters of the era. Robert
Nanteuil, Antoine Masson, Claude Mellan, William Faithorne, Jonas Suyderhoeff
and others became the most respected artists of this Golden Age of the
engraved portrait. Now, more than three hundred years later, one is still
amazed by the delicacy and technical virtuosity of their art. |
|
Paris was the centre for the portrait engraving, but many
other cities rivaled it. Augsburg was a strong competitor. An interesting
point about Augsburg was that from about 1600 to 1750 its artistic productions
were dominated by one family, the Kilian's. The first was the grandfather
of Bartholomaus Kilian. He fathered three sons who were all practicing
artists. One, Wolfgang Kilian, had three more sons; Johan (1632-1697),
Philipp (1628-1693) and Bartholomaus (1630-1696). The family line continued
to pass through three more generations of engraving artists. Bartholomaus
Kilian and his uncle, Lukas (1579-1637), are ranked as the most accomplished
engravers from this well known family. |
|
Bartholomaus Kilian first studied art under his father and
later finished his studies in engraving under Matthaus Merian, in Frankfort,
and de Poilly, in Paris. Upon returning to Augsburg, Bartholomaus Kilian established
himself as a leading engraver and was commissioned for the portraits of
European royalty and other important individuals. He is, in fact, responsible
for one of the largest and most remarkable engravings ever executed; The
Emperor Joseph on Horseback, rendered at full life scale! |
|
Bartholomaus Kilian's Leonhard Senfriedt Handelsmann in Augsburg
portrays a leading Augsburg merchant. Long admired as one of his most
accomplished engravings, it is a subtle rendering which captures a wide
range of expression, detail and tonal values. Works such as this made
Bartholomaus Kilian a master of his art. |
