Henry George Keller (Henry Keller)

Henry George Keller - Pig Study

Pig Study

This original drawing which I've entitled Pig Study and attributed to Henry George Keller (for soon to be explained reasons), fell into my hands in a delightfully, unexpected manner. Some years ago I acquired a grouping of exhibition catalogues, most dealing with Cleveland School artists. While leafing through one of the catalogues, entitled, Burchfield and his Teacher, Henry G. Keller -- which was published for an exhibition in 1973 at the Charles Burchfield Center in Buffalo, New York -- out popped this drawing from one of the pages. It had obviously been inserted there quite some time ago as the enveloping pages of the catalogue had taken on a brownish tone where it lay. On the verso of Pig Study the previous, unknown owner has written, "Henry Keller - Sketchbook", along the lower margin. Photographs of both the tone staining within the catalogue and the writing on the verso are provided in the text below. The exhibition catalogue is included with this purchase. I have no doubt about the authenticity of this original drawing. Henry Keller was a master of animal studies, such as horses and other farmyard animals. In particular his drawings and sketches of many animals were often created from an elevated position. One can imagine him, sketchbook in hand, looking down at and sketching the form and spirit of this wonderful, foraging beast.

Title: Pig Study
Artist: Keller, Henry George 'Henry Keller' (Cleveland, 1869 - San Diego, 1949)
Date: c. 1925 - 1945
Medium: Original Drawing
Note: Henry George Keller 'Henry Keller': A very influential modernist American painter of the early twentieth century, Henry Keller first studied art at the unlikely institution of the Western Reserve School of Design for Women, in 1887. Unable to find a teaching position in Cleveland he worked for eight years at the Morgan Lithograph Company designing circus posters. In 1899 Keller resumed his artistic education in Germany and studied at the art academies of Munich and Dusseldorf. His art received a silver medal at the 1902 Munich Kunstakademie Exhibition. He returned to Cleveland in 1903 to begin teaching as an instructor of watercolor at the Cleveland School of Art. Keller also created his own informal school at his family home in Berlin Heights, Ohio, during the summers of 1903 through to 1914. As a teacher of watercolor and drawing techniques, Keller’s influence was vast. Some of his most important pupils from this period include Charles Burchfield, Paul Travis and Frank Wilcox.
Beginning around 1910, Henry Keller championed the cause of modern art, both in his drawings and paintings and through his lectures and writings. In 1913 he exhibited two of his paintings at the now famous New York Armory Show, which introduced modern art to America. During the following years, Keller’s art was included in major exhibitions at such institutions as the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Carnegie Institute, the Art Institute of Chicago and at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
As well as being a master of landscapes and figure studies, Henry Keller devoted much of his talents to depictions of animals, and many fine examples will be found in his paintings, watercolors, drawings, etchings and lithographs. Pig Study is typical of Keller’s extraordinary ability to capture the essence of his subject with a minimum of lines and shades.
