Charles Keene's original etching, Scene of the Plague in London, 1665 belongs to the most ambitious project of the short lived Junior Etching Club (1857-1864). The club commissioned its members to illustrate a contemporary poem with an original etching. Upon publication the portfolio entitled, Passages from Modern English Poets contained forty-seven etchings by such distinguished artists as James McNeill Whistler, John Everett Millais, Charles Samuel Keene, Henry Moore and others. Charles Keene contributed this original etching to accompany the poem by John Wilson (1785-1854), The Plague of London, 1665. Wilson's poem begins with a quotation from the famous diary of Samuel Pepys (1633-1703). Because of its obvious relevance to Keene's masterful etching, I quote the short passage below;
This original etching is printed upon wove paper and with full margins as published in Passages from Modern English Poets in 1862. Bearing the artist's name, "'C. Keene" and the publisher's date and name, "London, Published December 1st, 1861 by Day & Sons, Lith. to the Queen" along the lower margin of the plate. Note: | Charles Keene 'Charles Samuel Keene': One of England's greatest pen and ink artists, Charles Samuel Keene was also a greatly respected etcher, although his oeuvre in this medium consists of only slightly over thirty plates. First articled to a solicitor, Charles Keene basically taught himself to draw. His career in illustration began in 1847 when he supplied the drawings for an edition of Robinson Crusoe. Many fine illustrated books followed, such as, Dulken's, The Book of German Songs (1856), Vaughan's, The Cambridge Grisette (1862), Burnand's, Tracks for Tourists (1864), Thackery's Roundabout Papers (1879) and Charles Reade's, The Cloister and the Hearth (1890). Yet these illustrated works are overshadowed by the massive contributions Keene made to the magazine, Punch, from 1852 until his death in 1891. |
Two wonderful artists of social life and customs worked for Punch Magazine during the latter nineteenth century; George Du Maurier (1834-1896) and Charles Samuel Keene. Du Maurier's societal haunt was that of wealth and privilege, Keene's that of the middle and lower classes. Both artists left valuable artistic and humorous records of the Victorian world. | |
Simon Houfe writes that Charles Keene's style went through several significant alterations. * His first illustrations bear an affinity with Georgian era caricaturists. By 1850 he was employing the strong lines of contemporary German illustrators, such as Menzel. His drawings soften during the 1860's, and in his final phase, economy of line is so pronounced that some scholars have compared his last drawings to those of Toulouse Lautrec and his last etchings to Whistler. | |
Charles Keene created slightly over thirty original etchings, most dating between 1855 and 1870. In these works he showed himself to be a master of figure studies, portraits, historical imagery and landscapes. He was a founding member of the Junior Etching Club and contributed at least three original etchings to their publications, including Scene of the Plague in London, 1665. Impressions of Scene of the Plague in London, 1665 are included in the collections of the Tate Gallery, London, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. | |

Day & Son, London: Some of the most ambitious and accomplished printmaking projects of the Victorian era were launched by the publishers, Day & Son. The firm began in the mid 1820's under the title of 'Day & Hague' and assumed its more familiar name 'Day & Son, London' in 1845. Charles Keene's original etching, Scene of the Plague in London, 1665 was published by 'Day & Son, London' between 1861-62. Throughout their early years they printed and published works of art dealing with a wide range of subjects, such as, hunting scenes, genre depictions, landscape scenes and topographical views. | |

The 'Junior Etching Club' (1857-1864) | ||||||||
The Junior Etching Club (1857-1864), was an institution that greatly contributed to the revival of Etching in England. Members included such prominent British artists as, Sir John Everett Millais, James McNeill Whistler, Sir Francis Powell, Henry Moore, Sir John Tenniel, Charles Samuel Keene, Joseph Clark, John Wright Oakes, Walter Severn, William Gale, Frederick Smallfield, Henry Clarence Whaite, Matthew James Lawless, Arthur James Lewis, Henry Stacy Marks, Charles Rossiter, Vincent Bury, Lord G. Fitzgerald, J. R. Clayton, John Sleigh, and Lord Gerald Fitzgerald. The Junior Etching Club often published their members’ etchings and all of the above named artists contributed to their portfolio, Passages from Modern English Poets, first published by Day & Son Limited, Lithographers & Publishers, London, 1862. In total, that publication contained forty-seven original etchings. The Junior Club also issued, another important publication in 1858, Passages from the Poems of Thomas Hood published by E.
