Kaoru Kawano

Kaoru Kawano- Dancing Figure - Mai Ogi

Dancing Figure (Mai Ogi)

Kaoru Kawano's original woodcut, "Dancing Figure (Mai Ogi)" is printed upon fine, thick, Japanese kozo paper and with full margins as printed by Kawano in the 1950's in an edition of three hundred impressions. It is signed in pencil under the 'Kaoru' red seal within the woodcut to the lower right and is also signed, titled (in both Japanese and English) and numbered by the artist in pencil along the lower margin. Kawano used four color blocks, including silver to create this masterwork of form, movement and texture. "Dancing Figure (Mai Ogi)" is clearly a striking, original example of the famous woodcut art created by the 20th century Japanese artist, Kaoru Kawano.

Title: Dancing Figure (Mai Ogi)
Artist: Kawano, Kaoru (Otaru, Hokkaido, 1916 - Tokyo, 1965)
Date: c. 1950 - 1960
Medium: Original Japanese Woodcut
Note: Kaoru Kawano: A fine Sosaku hanga artist, Kaoru Kawano began his art studies at the Kawabata Art School in 1934. His first published woodcuts were accepted by the Japan Print Association (Nihon Hanga Kyokai) in 1944. Shortly afterwards Kawano was unfortunately taken as a prisoner of war and imprisoned in Siberia. He returned to Japan around 1949 and began exhibiting his art with both the Nihon Hanga Kyokai and Kokugakai. Kawano moved permanently to Tokyo in 1958 and participated in numerous international expositions. By 1960 his woodcuts were the subject of solo exhibitions in New York, Seattle and Chicago.
As a leading Sosaku hanga artist, Kaoru Kawano (unlike many of the more traditional woodcut designers) not only designed his woodcuts but also carved the blocks and printed his own impressions. This is the case with Dancing Figure (Mai Ogi), which was entirely created by the artist. Such complete involvement led Kawano to utilize the natural textures of the woodgrain and to explore both simplification and abstraction of form. These elements are most important to understanding Kawano's modern art.
Dancing Figure (Mai Ogi) is one of Kaoru Kawano's largest (double oban size) and most famous works of woodcut art. Created in the 1950's it showcases the skills of this great artist. Using four color blocks (including silver) it is a masterwork of form, movement and texture. As well, mica grounds have been applied by the artist throughout the image.
A Note on Impressions of Kawano Woodcuts: Posthumous impressions of some of Kaoru Kawano's woodcuts do exist. These are easy to detect as they obviously are not pencil signed by the artist. As well, they usually do not bear edition numbers. Instead, they often contain a black, circular seal on the verso of the paper. Clearly these posthumous impressions are worth only a fraction of Kawano's signed and numbered woodcuts.
No posthumous impressions for Dancing Figure exist. It is known, however, that Kawano created a much smaller, oban sized woodcut upon this theme. Besides its much smaller size this woodcut uses different colors and variations of texture.
Edition: Limited edition of three hundred impressions, numbered 182/300.
Size: 22 X 14 3/4 (Sizes in inches are approximate, height preceding width of plate-mark or image.)

Condition: Printed upon fine, thick, Japanese kozo paper and with full margins as printed by Kawano in the 1950's. Backed upon board by a former framer but showing no signs of surface deterioration, probably due to the strength of the kozo paper. Signed in pencil under the 'Kaoru' red seal within the woodcut to the lower right and also signed, titled (in both Japanese and English) and numbered, '182/300', by the artist in pencil along the lower margin. A finely printed impression with full mica grounds and in good condition throughout. Dancing Figure (Mai Ogi) represents a spectacular, original example of the famous woodcut art of Kaoru Kawano.
