Katsura Evening - Kyoto |
Artist: |
Karhu, Clifton (Duluth, Minnesota, 1927 - Resides, Kyoto, Japan) |
Date: |
1972 |
Medium: |
Original Woodcut |
Note: |
"Phonetically 'Karhu' could be a Japanese name, but it belongs to
an American originally from Minnesota. Like the sound of his name, his
art is Japanese in so many ways that he deserves to be included in a report
on Japanese graphics. ... He has a talent for creating mood in such touches
as a shaft of sunlight filtering into a courtyard or illumination falling
onto a street at dusk." *

|
Clifton Karhu's first exposure to Japan occurred in 1946 when he was
serviceman of the American forces in occupied Japan. He was stationed at
Sasebo, an American naval base near Nagasaki. Karhu then returned to his
native state and studied painting and printmaking at the Minneapolis Art
School from 1950 to 1952. |
|
In 1952 Clifton Karhu again journeyed to Japan, this time as a missionary
for the Lutheran Church. He travelled extensively in this capacity, particularly
in Kyoto, Shiga and Hiroshima. In 1958, however, Karhu became disillusioned
with missionary work. He settled in Gifu prefecture and began his career
as an artist. Within three years his paintings and watercolors were exhibited
widely in Japan and, in 1961, he won first prize at the Middle Pacific
Art Group Exhibition. |
|
Clifton Karhu moved to Kyoto in 1963 and shortly thereafter created his
first woodcuts. One year later his woodcuts were exhibited in that city
at the Yamada Gallery. During the following years his woodcuts (completely
carved and printed by himself) have been included in major exhibitions
in Japan, the United States, Singapore, Hong Kong, France, Austria and
Finland. Karhu also owns the distinction of being the first elected foreign
member of the Japan Print Association and is past President of the Kyoto
Chapter. Today the woodcut art of Clifton Karhu is included in the permanent
collections of such institutions as the Museum of Fine Arts and the Fogg
Art Museum, Boston, the Minnesota Museum of Art, the Cincinnati Art Museum,
Harvard University, the National Gallery of Australia, Japan Culture Institute
and the Kunst Museum, Salzburg, Austria. |
