Note: Ryotai Kanyosai was a prominent Naga style artist of what is now known as the School of Nagasaki. The School was actually inspired by a Chinese artist, Shen Nampin, who visited that city in the 1730's. Ryotai Kanyosai studied painting a print making techniques under Kumashiro Yuhi, a direct pupil of Shen Nampin.
Like the illustrated books of other School of Nagasaki artists, such as as So Shiseki and Mori Ransai, Ryotai Kanyosai's volumes pay homage to the art of the Chinese master. The woodcuts of Kanyosai are remarkable for their suggestion of brush-applied ink. This was achieved by what has been termed the 'trituration' of the actual block by master cutters. By painstakingly stippling the wood block, Kanyosai's printers and publishers achieved a most subtle, mottled effect. This is clearly seen in Jack-in-the Pulpit, most particularly in the foliage surrounding the flowers. Woodcuts, such as this original example, are considered master works of eighteenth century printmaking techniques.
