David Kandel & Albrecht Durer's "De Rhinocerote" (Rhinoceros): Albrecht Durer's paintings, engravings and woodcuts place him as the most important figure of northern Renaissance art. He created his woodcut, "The Rhinoceros", in 1515. It is known that he had never seen such an animal but based his design upon a sketch by an unknown hand and descriptions from various letters. Around thirty years later the Strasbourg woodcut artist, David Kandel, created his "Rhinoceros" for Sebastian Munster's, "Cosmographia". Based closely upon Albrecht Durer's earlier work, David Kandel eliminated Durer's monogram and title and inserted his own 'DK' monogram. This original woodcut entitled, "De Rhinocerote" is printed upon hand-made, laid paper as published in 1572 for the "Cosmographia". |

Note: | David Kandel: One of the finest aspects of the Renaissance was the search for knowledge of the natural world. Equally at play in both the arts and the sciences this element of inquiry forever altered and broadened our way of seeing. David Kandel was one of the earliest and finest pioneers of botanical art. His beautifully rendered woodcuts opened the eyes and minds of many as to the wonderful varieties of plant life. Yet, as is the case with many Renaissance artists, surprisingly little is known of his life. |
David Kandel was the son of a Strasbourg citizen and was probably born in that city. We know he was married in 1554 and owned a house in 1587. His activities as a woodcut artist are varied. He designed several portraits, some Biblical scenes, animal studies, topographical views, botanicals and a number of early maps. His greatest work in the field of botanical art is found in the 530 woodcuts he created for the "Kreuterbuch" of Hieronymus Bock.
"De Rhinocerote" (Rhinoceros) was created for the influential "Cosmographia" of Sebastian Munster (1488-1552). First published in 1544, the "Cosmographia" explored the then known world. The importance of both its text and woodcut illustrations is underlined by the fact that between 1544 and 1628 about forty printings of the "Cosmographia" were published and updated in German, Latin, French and Italian editions.
This particular impression of "De Rhinocerote" hails from the final Latin edition of 1572. The horizontal white line running slightly above the legs of the rhinoceros indicates that at some point during the woodcut's printing history, the block split and was repaired. Nevertheless this is a good impression, clearly showing all the fine lines and tones indicative of David Kandel's fine art.
