Note: Henri Octave Julien: Henri Julien earned the distinction of being the first Canadian artist to secure a strong international reputation. Almost completely self-taught, his drawing abilities and skills stood head and shoulders above his Canadian contemporaries. Julien first apprenticed as a lithographer in Montreal in 1869. His first illustrative works were commissioned by the Canadian Illustrated News in 1874 and were drawing of life in the Canadian West. Other commissions quickly followed, including designs published by Harper's, in the United States, and Le Monde Illustre, in France. Julien began to work for the Montreal Daily Star in the mid 1880's and in 1888 accepted that publishers's offer as Head of their Art Department, with the provision that all his art would be published in the Star. Hence, with the aid of Julien, the Montreal Star became a major publisher of Canadian prints.
The art of Henri Octave Julien is famous on two fronts. Firstly, he became Canada's most famous satirical artist and caricaturist. His 1890's attacks upon Sir Wilfred Laurier and his cabinet, depicted as, "the By-Town Coons" remain a cornerstone in satirical art to this day. Secondly, Julien's more serious studies of nineteenth century Montreal and French Canadian life are without equal. He is the great draftsman of nineteenth century Quebec.
The Montreal Daily Star (founded in 1867) became a major publisher of original Canadian prints with the rapid rise of the Montreal Winter Carnival. Beginning in 1883, it was Canada's first large winter celebration and predated Quebec City's Carnival by eleven years. Highly competitive sporting events took place throughout the city. The Winter Carnival became a hugely successful event. The Montreal Star and competing publishers thus hired Canada's greatest artists to commemorate the activities. One need only mention that three of the major artists covering the Carnival at the time were Henri Julien, William Raphael and Robert Harris. Their original lithographs in this field stand as an important historical and artistic document of nineteenth century Canada.
