Note: |
Francis Jourdain: An influential twentieth
century painter, etcher, designer and writer, Francis Jourdain was the
son of the architect and scholar, Frantz Jourdain. Jourdain's first exhibited
paintings and etchings show an affinity with the Intimiste style of Vuillard
and Bonnard. He exhibited regularly with the Salon d'Automne and with
the Societe des Artistes Decorateurs. Jourdain was also a founding member
of the avant-garde group known as the Union des Artistes Modernes (1929),
and was an important member there until 1947. |
|
At the core of all Francis Jourdain's art is his opposition
to the extravagance and ostentatious designs that characterized much of
French art. One can see in Landscape, for example, an important
exploration for simplicity and honesty of style and technique. These concerns
also led him to the art of furniture design, in 1911, and the following
year he opened his furniture factory, Les Ateliers Modernes. |
