Note: | Louis Jou: An early twentieth century etcher and wood engraver, Louis Jou illustrated a large number of books in France. His original etchings and wood engravings appeared in books authored by Andre Gide, Balery, Victor Hugo, Gourmont, Wilde, Cervantes and many more. Louis Jou was so successful in this artistic medium that he set up his own publishing house in Paris in order to gain greater freedom for the creation of his books. |
Louis Jou is most often referred to as an artist of the French school, yet there is usually a quality of his native Spain evident within his art. Such is particularly the case with his etchings and woodcuts dealing with the First World War. Evacues, an individual etching commissioned by the Gazette des Beaux-Arts in 1916, portrays evacuees and a German soldier. The postures and features of all the characters are superbly rendered. Living in Paris, Louis Jou experienced the war personally and was appalled by the hardships, brutality and destruction he witnessed. Like his great predecessor, Goya, he poignantly depicted the horrors of war.
Gazette des Beaux Arts: The revival of etching as a prominent form of art first took place in France in the mid nineteenth century. Sparked by the Paris etchings of Charles Meryon, French artists elevated etching to a creative process of art as vital as painting or sculpture. Such an outburst of artistic energy in this field had not been seen since the days of Rembrandt and other seventeenth century Dutch master etchers.
At the vanguard of this wave was the Paris based Gazette des Beaux Arts. Beginning with its initial publication in 1859, the Gazette regularly commissioned the greatest etchers of the day to supply original graphic art for publication. Nineteenth century editions included original etchings by Daubigny, Goya, Meryon, Whistler, Seymour Haden, Max Liebermann, Albert Besnard, Louis Jou and others. And from the beginning of the twentieth century until it ceased publication in 1930, such fine international artists as John Sloan, Paul Adrien Bouroux, Georges Gobo, Louis Jou and Donald Shaw MacLaughlan contributed works of art. With artists such as these it's easy to understand why etchings from the Gazette have long been sought after.
