Frederick Waistell Jopling 'Frederick Jopling': Born in England, Frederick Waistell Jopling came to Canada at the age of fourteen. He entered the Ontario Society of Artists Art School in Toronto in 1877 and studied under Lucius O'Brien and John Fraser. In 1880 F. W. Jopling moved to Manhattan where he concluded his studies at the Art Students League, under Walter Shirlaw, William Sartain and William Chase. He remained in New York for a period of thirty-two years, working as a staff artist for the "New York Herald" and as a free lance illustrator
for "Harper's Weekly" and "Colliers". During this period, Frederick Jopling was also commissioned to create posters for steamship and railway companies and was employed by the American Bank Note Company. |
|
Frederick Waistell Jopling returned to Toronto in 1912. During
the following years he concentrated upon painting and etching the cities
and landscapes of Canada, particularly around Toronto and the Niagara Peninsula.
He was a frequent exhibitor with the Ontario Society of Artists (c. 1917-1940)
and at the Royal Canadian Academy (1883-1919). |
|
F. W. Jopling was a full member of the Print Makers’ Society
of California, the American Federation of Arts and the Canadian Painter-Etchers
(C.P.E.). Today his art is included in many major collections such as,
The National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa. |
|
Perhaps because Frederick Jopling studied, lived and worked in New York City for over thirty years,
his original etchings and engravings show a more experimental approach
in technique than one usually finds in Canadian etching during the initial
decades of the twentieth century. He was one of only a few Canadian artists
at this time to practice such methods as mezzotinting and soft ground etching
on a consistent basis. In the original etching, "Hampton Court", for example,
F. W. Jopling combines hard and soft grounds with plate tone to create
a complex, atmospheric image. Frederick Waistell Jopling's "Hampton Court" depicts
a former Royal Palace in Richmond upon Thames, South West London. |
