Edward Jones: An Irish painter, watercolourist
and miniature artist, Edward Jones studied at the Dublin Society Schools.
His first formal works of
art were exhibited in that city in 1800. During the following thirty years
Edward Jones built a considerable reputation in his native country as a
painter of portraits and miniatures, and for a time, held the post of Secretary
of the Hibernian Society of Artists. By 1830, however, Jones had relocated
in London and turned his talents to depictions of landscapes and architectural
studies. During the 1830's and 1840's he travelled throughout
Europe, as drawings and watercolours of scenes in various parts of England,
France, Spain and Italy bear his name. His finely crafted art was well
received and he began to exhibit with the British Institute in 1839. Upon
his retirement (c. 1850), Edward Jones returned to Dublin. |

The drawings of Edward Jones are notable for both their accuracy
and for their renderings. Usually, Edward Jones would initially create his compositions
in pen and ink and then would build up areas of light and shade with layers
of wash. His drawings were always carefully conceived and quite small in
size. Only the completed studies (such as this original example of Canterbury)
were titled, dated and signed. |

This arcitectural drawing depicts one of the oldest remaining structures of Canterbury Cathedral.
By the year 1070 the Cathedral was completely rebuilt by the Normans,
due to a major fire. A staircase (now known as "The Norman Staircase") and parts of the North Wall,
in the area of the North West transept, are all that remain from that building. |

and with full margins as created by Edward Jones in May, 1833. Signed,

a beautiful drawing of the staircase of Canterbury Cathedral and is in

Altogether, Canterbury represents a prime, original example of early
