Edme Jeaurat: A distinguished early eighteenth century
engraver, Edme Jeaurat was first apprenticed to Bernard Picart in Paris.
He then went to Holland for several years to study the art of the Netherlandish
masters. Jeaurat returned to Paris in 1715 and established his reputation
with his fine engravings after the paintings held in the Crozat collection.
These included large plates after Poussin, Veronese and Watteau. |
|
Around 1720 Edme Jeaurat began collaborating his talents
with those of his younger brother, Etienne Jeaurat (French, 1699 - 1789). Etienne
had distinguished himself as a major painter of portraits and religious
scenes, which were then engraved by Edme and even published by the brothers
at their rue St. Jacques gallery. Pierre Puget, le Michel-Ange de la
France is typical of the fine collaborative work of the Jeaurat brothers. |
|
Collections of the engraved art of Edme Jeaurat will be
found in the British Museum, London, and the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris. |

Pierre Puget (Marseille, 1620 - 1694) was perhaps
France's greatest sculptor of the seventeenth century. At the age of seventeen
he began working in Italy for Pietro da Cortona on the ceilings of the
Barberini and Pitti palaces. Early in his career, Pierre Puget was commissioned
for paintings in churches in Aix-en-Provence and Toulon, but later he
dedicated himself wholly to sculpture. His most esteemed works of art
in this medium can be seen in Florence, Rome, Marseille, Toulon and Paris.
His famous Milon of Crotona was initially sculpted for the palace
at Versailles and is now in the collection of the Louvre. |
