Note: Like so many other objects produced by Japanese nineteenth century culture the classic doll served both a utilitarian and artistic function. The doll was thus a carefully constructed sculpture, and the equal to those that were carved in wood or made of bronze.
This beautiful drawing was probably made in the workshop of a nineteenth century doll maker and may represent a preparatory study. The hand-made mulberry paper it is drawn upon was used until about 1890, when thicker papers of Western influence began to replace it. The drawing therefore may be considerably older than the above date.
