As a portraitist, Violeta Janes excelled in her applications of colours and tonal values. Often she created patterns of Impressionist patches of colours to delineate light, shade and form. More importantly, her brush brought forth the inner spirit or soul of those she portrayed. This is the mark of a great portrait painter. Study for a Portrait clearly shows her art at its finest, particularly her ability to render feeling through form and colour. This 'study for a portrait' is an original oil painting created by the British Artist, Violeta Janes betwen 1950 and 1960. It is painted upon thick archival paper and with full margins and signed by Violeta Janes to the lower right. |

Note: | Violeta Janes: The daughter of British diplomats, Violeta Janes spent her youth in Argentina. Showing early artistic promise, she was sent to London (c. 1928) to study at the Regent Street Polytechnic School of Art and at the City and Guilds School of Art. Violeta Janes completed her education at the Watford School of Art. During this time she was fortunate to study intensively under two of England's finest portrait and figure artists; A. R. Middleton Todd (1891-1967) and Augustus John (1878-1961). |
Violeta Janes first gained recognition in the 1930's as both an illustrative and commercial artist. She illustrated stories and articles for children's periodicals and was even commissioned in this capacity to work for the Disney Studios in London. As well she created some striking textile designs and original watercolours for advertising in the Art Deco style.
By the end of the Second World War Janes had turned almost exclusively to portrait and figure painting. Her art was regularly exhibited at such major venues as the Royal Academy (from 1948), the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, the Pastel Society and at the Paris Salon. She was also invited to participate in the Bilan de l'Art Contemporain Exhibition at the Place de Louvre, Paris. Solo exhibitions of her art took place in London at the Broomfield Museum and at the Mayfair Art Gallery, as well as in Quebec City, at the Municipal Congress Centre. Violeta Janes was a full member of the Federation of British Artists, the United Society of Artists and the Societe Francais, Paris.
