Ota Janecek: A famous twentieth century Czech painter,
sculptor and illustrator, Ota Janecek studied at the Academy of Decorative
Arts, Prague, under Professor Kysela (1938-1941). When the German occupation
of Czechoslovakia ended in 1945, Ota Janecek traveled to Paris where he became
part of an arts community which included Antonio Calve and Oscar Dominguez.
He was also frequently invited to the studios of Picasso and Braque and
became influenced by Cubist forms and ideas. By 1948, however, Ota Janecek
had developed a very personal style, without abandoning Cubism or non-figurative
painting. The expressive qualities of form and colour began to emerge
as primary concerns. |
|
During the following years Ota Janecek's art was the subject
of numerous one-man shows and hundreds of exhibitions worldwide. An extremely
versatile artist, Janecek gained attention not only for his paintings
and sculpture but for his etchings, book illustrations and for his designs
of stamps, textiles and jewelry. |
|
Among Ota Janecek's most remarkable works of art are his paintings
from the 1960's decade. Here form is defined and analyzed completely by
colour. During this period he developed a most unusual technique of overlaying
and scraping areas of colours to achieve a type of mosaic. These qualities
clearly emerge in this masterful 1966 painting, entitled, Head. |
|
Today, Ota Ota Janecek's paintings are included in major museums
throughout the world. The Long Foundation for the Arts in Austin, Texas,
owns a Janecek painting from 1964 which displays similar concerns in its
fine use of layered colours. A reproduction of this painting is included. |

The author Peter Cannon-Brookes has recently completed
a book on the artist entitled, Ota Janecek (1999). |
