to both Paris and Brussels, Irmer achieved an international reputation
as early as 1870. His fine landscape compositions were awarded medals in
Vienna (1873), Dusseldorf (1880), Berlin (1880 and 1881), London (1887)

A Note on The Dusseldorf Gallery: During the latter nineteenth century
the city of Dusseldorf grew to be one of the most important centers of
painting and etching in all of Germany. Such fine artists as Franz Stegmann,
Carl Hoff, Max Volkhart, Carl Irmer, Heinrich Deiters, von Eckenbrecher,
Kroener and Jutz produced most of their best paintings and etchings while
residing there. |

Such was the appeal of the Dusseldorf etchers that a portfolio of twenty original etchings was published not only in Germany but in America as well. In America, the Boston print publishers of Estes and Lauriat published a special edition of twenty original etchings created by noted German artists under the title of "The Dusseldorf Gallery", 1888 [1887]. According to "The Annual American Catalogue", 1887 published in 1888, which contained descriptive notes, of all books recorded in the Publishers' Weekly, 1887, "The Dusseldorf Gallery" portfolio published by Estes and Lauriat included three original etching by Carl Irmer (1834 - 1900), “The Outskirts of the Woods”, ”An early Spring”, and this original etching entitled, “Landscape with Cows”; three original etchings by Max Volkhart (1848 - 1909), “The Hearing Before the Burgomaster”, “The Reading” and “Much Ado About Nothing”; two original etchings by Carl Jutz (1838 - 1916), “A Large Family” and “Ducks”; two original etchings by Jacobus Leisten (1844 - 1918), “Au Revoir” and “The Arrival”; two original etchings by Johann Christian Kroener (1838-1911), “A Swineherd in the Woods” and “Wild Boar at the Stream”; as well as an original etching by each the following German artists, “In the Church” by Franz Stegmann (1831 - 1892); “The Forbidden Passage” by Philip Grotiohann, also listed as 'Philipp Grot Johann' (1841 - 1892); “In the Pasture” by Ernst Bosch (1834 - 1917); “The Lake in the Woods” by G. Meissner; “Evening in the Bosphorus” by K. P T. von Eckenbrecher 'Karl Paul Themistocles von Eckenbrecher' (1842 - 1921); “Landscape with Sheep” by Carl Ludwig Fahrbach (1835 - 1903); “The Forest Pathway” by Heinrich Deiters (1840 - 1916); and “Sorrowful Recollections” by Carl Heinrich Hoff The Younger (1866 - 1904). In total the set was limited to the edition of 350 impressions. Most were printed on laid paper. The more expensive sets, however, were printed upon India and Japan papers as well as on parchment and satin.
