The Romance of Rama and Sita is an Illuminated Miniature Painting created by a 19th century Indian school artist around 1880. It is painted upon thin nineteenth century paper of Indian origin and with full margins. From both standpoints of artistry and preservation, this miniature painting represents a prime example of nineteenth century Indian art. In Indian mythology, Rama was the seventh incarnation of Vishu. He won Sita as his wife because he was able to bend the bow of Siva. |
Title: | The Romance of Rama and Sita |
Artist: | 19th Century Indian School Artist |
Date: | c. 1880 |
Medium: | Original Illuminated Miniature Painting |
Note: | Illuminated miniature paintings were produced to adorn unique, hand-written volumes. The birth of the printing press in the west severely diminished this splendid and exacting art form, but masterpieces of illuminated miniatures continued to be created in both India and in Persia well into the nineteenth century. |
Invariably, these paintings are by unrecorded hands -- the artist choosing anonymity in order for the viewer or patron to judge the art on its own merits. Thus the measure of a truly great miniature painter was his ability to produce a convincing sense of depth and space within a small surface. This masterful painting with its strong elements of detail, colour and form ranks among the finest examples of works of art from this period. The detailing of the couple in the foreground, the soft modulations of the landscape and the utilization of floral patterns throughout the composition is quite amazing.
This original miniature painting no doubt depicts the romance of the Rama and Sita. In Indian mythology, Rama was the seventh incarnation of Vishu. He performed many wonderful exploits such as killing giants, demons and other monsters. He won Sita as his wife because he was able to bend the bow of Siva. Their honeymoon forms one of the most romantic episodes in legend. At night they would wander to a pond filled with lotus blooms in the moonlight. These hours spent together were for both supreme joy.
In this work of art the lovers occupy the foreground. The blue tone of Rama's skin indicates his relation to the supreme God, Vishu. The pond occupies the background while flowering blooms surround them. This is truly remarkable scene executed by a very gifted painter.
