William Humphrys: Born in Dublin, Humphrys moved to America at an early age. He studied engraving techniques under George Murray in Philadelphia and began his career as an engraver there in 1815. William Humphrys was principally employed to provide vignettes for bankers’ notes and as a stamp engraver for the United States government. In 1823, Humphrys moved to England where he also engraved postage stamps as well as larger art for the illustrated annuals and individual publishers. William Humphrys returned to America in 1843 but two years later accepted a commission to move to Dublin to engrave The Reading Magdalene for the Royal Irish Art Union. The final years of his life were spent in Genoa, where he retired on account of ill health.
Most of William Humphrys’s art was on a small scale. His mastery with creating closely connected networks of engraved lines made him a natural miniaturist. One can see by the complex engraved work in The Reading Magdalene that this plate probably involved his efforts for almost a year. It is also of interest that this original engraving was printed and published in Dublin. Very few Irish engravings were created in the nineteenth century, particularly examples as skillful as this. G. C. Williamson lists The Reading Magdalene as among the five greatest works of William Humphrys.
