etchers of the 1920's and 1930's, Edward Bouverie Hoyton studied at the
University of London Goldsmiths College under both Malcolm Osborne and
Stanley Anderson. His first etchings were published by the Fine Art Society,
London, in 1924. Only two years later (1926) Hoyton's etchings and engravings
won for him the coveted Prix de Rome. During the following years he traveled
and worked in Wales, Yorkshire, Cornwall, Devon, the Isles of Scilly and
Italy. Also a well respected teacher, Edward Bouverie Hoyton became a
lecturer at Leeds College, 1934, and held the post of Principal at the
Penzance School of Art from 1941 to 1965. |
|
Today the etchings and engravings of Edward Bouverie Hoyton
are included in many major British and American collections, such as the
Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Museum, London. In 2000 the
Aberystwyth School of Art, University of Wales, acquired an exhaustive
collection of Hoyton's engravings, drawings and watercolours with the
support of the National Art Collections fund. |
|
Edward Bouverie Hoyton was a master of landscape, architectural
and portrait engraving. Scholars have compared his landscape and architectural
art to such masters as J. M. W. Turner, F. L. Griggs, and Samuel Palmer.
