Samuel Howitt's original etching, "The Hare and The Tortoise" hails from his set entitled, "Groups of Animals" published in London by Edward Orme. Here, the artist depicts a scene with a tortoise trudging down the road as it passes a hare resting in the bush, an old story that is familiar to all of us. This etching is printed on early nineteenth century wove paper and with full margins as published between 1809 and 1811. It is signed by Howitt in the plate. "The Hare and The Tortoise" is a fine, original example of the animal and landscape art created by the 19th century British artist, Samuel Howitt. |

Note: | Samuel Howitt: Those familiar with late eighteenth and early nineteenth century British sporting and animal art will quickly recognize the name of Samuel Howitt. Mainly self-taught, Howitt was distinguished both as a painter and etcher of animal scenes and hunts. Samuel Howitt lived and worked in London and was married to the sister of none other than Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827), the great English satirical master. The two artists, in fact, collaborated on some watercolours and aquatint engravings. |
Howitt's large and important prints may be found in "Shooting and Coursing" (1791), "Fox Hunting" (1794) and in "The British Sportsman" (1800). Some of his most charming and intimate original etchings, however, belong to a set entitled, "Groups of Animals", which Howitt had published from 1809 to 1811. "The Hare and the Tortoise" hails from this set which, when completed, contained forty-four plates, all published in London by Edward Orme. It clearly indicates why Samuel Howitt is regarded as a master of the animal study. | |
