George Houston's, original drypoint engraving on vellum, Fishing Boats Returning to Dock dates from 1913. The artist, in fact, created this drypoint to adorn a dinner invitation, for along the lower margins the following words appear: "Bohemian Club Founded 1889 Annual Dinner In the Conservative Club Bothwell Street on Wednesday 19th February 1913." Around the turn of the century many cities were homes to 'Bohemian Clubs'. In all probability this club was located in Glasgow as the 'New' Conservative Club is currently situated there on 33 Bothwell Street. No doubt, George Houston was a member. He has signed this charming fishing scene in the plate to the lower left. This is a fine, original example of the marine scenes created by The Scottish artist, George Houston. |
Title: | Fishing Boats Returning to Dock |
Artist: | Houston, George (Dalry, Ayrshire, Scotland, 1869 - 1947) |
Date: | 1913 |
Medium: | Original Drypoint Engraving on Vellum |
Note: | George Houston: A late nineteenth and early twentieth century Scottish painter, etcher and engraver, George Houston was a pupil of the Glasgow School of Art. Houston concentrated upon landscapes and marine scenes of his native Ayrshire, Argyllshire and Iona. Many (including this original example) include imagery of his favourite pastime, angling. |
George Houston lived all his life in Dalry, Ayrshire. He also maintained a permanent studio in Glasgow. George Houston was a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours (1920) and the Royal Scottish Watercolour Society (1908). He was elected an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1909 and became a full Academician in 1924.
Size: | 4 1/4 X 3 1/4 (Sizes in inches are approximate, height preceding width of plate-mark or image.) |
Framed and Matted with 100% Archival Materials
Condition: | Fishing Boats Returning to Dock survived a somewhat hostile framing effort. Its margins were thoroughly glued to the initial matte. It was saved only because it is on vellum, which is far stronger than most papers. As well, slight overall light toning exists within the engraving. Else, Fishing Boats Returning to Dock is in good overall condition and represents a fine (perhaps unique, considering its original function,) example of the Scottish art of George Houston. |
