Jacobus Houbraken's portrait of Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel is an original engraving created by the 18th century Dutch engraver based upon a painting by Peter Paul Rubens. This impression is printed upon eighteenth century hand-made, laid paper as published by Knapton in London in 1744 for the historical series, Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain. It is a fine, original example of the engraved art created by one of the most accomplished portrait engravers of the eighteenth century, Jacobus Houbraken. Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel was the most significant and influential English patron of the arts during the reign of James the First. He was particularly celebrated in his own time for his valuable collection of ancient Greek sculpture (now called the Arundel Marbles and housed at Oxford University) and for his superb library. Howard was also important to the arts of his own day. He was the first patron of the famous architect, Inigo Jones. He was also the principal patron of Wenzel Hollar, one of the greatest etchers of the seventeenth century. |

Note: | Jacobus Houbraken: One of the most accomplished portrait engravers of the eighteenth century, Jacobus Houbraken first studied and apprenticed under his father, Arnold Houbraken (1660-1719), a well known engraver in his own right. The younger Houbraken rapidly evolved a technique that shared an affinity with the portrait engravers of the great seventeenth century French school, most notably, Nanteuil, Drevet and Edelinck. Houbraken, however, surpassed even these famous masters in his abilities to capture textures and tones. His skills amazed his contemporary artists and those who followed after him. A generation later, the leading Italian engraver, Raphael Morghen, remarked, "No engraver has ever equaled, and probably will not equal, the Dutchman Jacobus Houbraken, in the manner of imitating the flesh and the hair by means of the graver." * Houbraken's remarkable talents are seen to their best effect in the earliest impressions. Such is the case with this original portrait engraving of Thomas Howard Earl of Arundel. |
During his career both Dutch and English publishers constantly sought Houbraken's skills. His most famous engravings for English publication were those for the historical series, Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain, published in parts in London between 1734 and 1752. Requiring almost twenty years to complete, the set contained one hundred and eight portraits of British luminaries dating from the 14th to early 18th centuries. Important Kings, Queens, noblemen, politicians, writers, scientists and philosophers were included. The English engraver and historian, George Vertue, was also commissioned to work on the set but most of the great portrayals were left in the hands of Houbraken, including those of Newton, Pope, Dryden, Shakespeare and Milton. Under the framed portrait of each individual, Jacobus (Jacob) Houbraken also engraved both the delightful vignettes and objects describing the importance of each person.
Houbraken’s portrait of Thomas Howard Earl of Arundel, is based upon a painting created by Peter Paul Rubens. It was published by Knapton in 1744 for the publication entitled, "Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain".
Peter Paul Rubens: A famous Flemish painter, Peter Paul Rubens also known as Pieter Pauwel Rubens studied under the painters, Adam van Noort and Otto van Veen in Antwerp. Along with Anthony van Dyck (Antwerp, Flanders, 1599 - 1641), Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) was one of the most influential Baroque artist during the seventeenth century. In the 1620's Rubens founded an engraver's school in Antwerp in order to render his paintings and drawings into copper. Such great engravers as Lucas Vorsterman (1595-1675), Nicolaes Lauwers (1600-1652), Boetius a Bolswert (1580-1633) and Paulus Pontius (1603-1658) formed the cornerstone of what was soon known as the 'School of Rubens'.
Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel (1585-1646) was the most significant and influential English patron of the arts during the reign of James the First. Thomas Howard was the 14th Earl of Arundel, the 4th Earl of Surrey and the 1st Earl of Norfolk. Jacobus Houbraken has fittingly surrounded his portrait with some of his valuable objects of art and antiquity.
