Hosai’, also known as Kunisada III created this original woodcut, entitled, "Actors Onoe Eisaburo, Onoe Kikugoro, Nakamura Kitchiemon & Nakumura Koume in a Kabuki Drama" in 1880 for the Series: Geki Ju Shichi Yu Sh. It displays a complex range of colors including red, pink, purple, yellow, green, gray and black. Two scenes from a Kabuki play (including one with a monkey) are depicted. The crests of each actor are printed in the background in white. Printed and published in Japan at the date stated, it is a fine, original example of the Meiji era woodcut art by the Japanese artist, Hosai and of the late Utagawa School. |

Note: | Hosai 'Utagawa Kunisada III': With the art of Hosai the woodcuts of the famous Utagawa school drew to close. For more than a century the master artists of this school had been dominant in a major genre of Japanese woodblock art -- the actor print. Founded by Toyokuni in the late eighteenth century, his most gifted Utagawa School pupils, Kunisada and Kuniyoshi, rose to the fore in the early nineteenth century. In turn, their many pupils carried on the great tradition into the Meiji era between (1868 & 1912). Yoshitoshi was the student of Kuniyoshi while Kunimasa, Sadahide and Hosai apprenticed under Kunisada. The bonds holding this school together through the 19th century were very strong, embracing even names and titles. Upon the death of the master, the most prestigious student would inherit his name. Thus, in 1844, Kunisada assumed the name of Toyokuni III, and, in 1889, Hosai became Kunisada III. |
Few woodcuts by Hosai exist that do not depict the actors of the Kabuki stage. The actors from this theatre were his specialty and his depictions in this genre stand among the best examples of the last generation of the Utagawa School. While using the vibrant colors one associates with the Meiji era, Hosai managed to depict his scenes with both delicacy and a strong power of expression. With the dawning of the twentieth century, however, Western art and culture had begun to dominate. The great Kabuki theatre and its woodcut art were now but a shadow of their former greatness. | |
