Samuel Hollyer's original engravings, 'A Collection of Historical New York Views': The following collection includes original hand signed engravings by Samuel Hollyer depicting historical views of such New York landmarks as "Bowling Green in Colonial Days (1750)", "Corner of 34th Street & 11th Avenue", "Ferry House, Corner of Broad & Garden Streets (1700)", "First Brick Presbyterian Church", "First Garden Street Church (or Old South) (1693)", "Franconi's Hippodrome, Madison Square, Broadway (1853)", "Fulton Market (1852)", "Government House (1790)", "New York Harbor & Yacht Fancy", "Novum Amsterodamum (New Amsterdam)", "Number 7 State Street", "Old Revenue Office (1849)", "Rotunda (1816)", "Union Square & Broadway" and "Wall Street (1825)". These original Samuel Hollyer engravings thus constitute a most impressive grouping of Manhattan art, culture and history.
Samuel Hollyer: Born in England, Samuel Hollyer studied engraving techniques under Edward and William Finden. He first came to the United States in 1851 and was commissioned by various New York City publishers. He twice returned to work in England, for periods of two and six years, before settling permanently in New York in 1861. For more than the following fifty years Samuel Hollyer created many fine engravings mezzotints and etchings. He was equally well respected for his topographical views, portraits and ex-libris plates.
Samuel Hollyer began perhaps his most important contribution to the arts at the age of seventy-five. From 1901 to 1912 he created at least 141 historical engravings depicting views of New York concentrating upon scenes and buildings that were mostly no more. Churches, markets, taverns, houses, public buildings and other institutions were depicted from the early seventeenth to the late nineteenth centuries. Each engraving was issued separately in small, hand-signed editions and collected by antiquarians and such prominent New Yorkers as J. Clarence Davies. The original engravings listed on this page are printed upon fine china paper impressed onto a sheet of white, wove paper and are all signed in pencil by Samuel Hollyer under the engraving.
Today the art of Samuel Hollyer is included in such major collections as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Extensive collections of Hollyer's Old New York views will be found at both the Museum of the City of New York and the New-York Historical Society. The New-York Historical Society has recently published a useful research paper entitled, Guide to Samuel Hollyer's Old New York Views *
