Wenzel Hollar (Wenceslaus Hollar)

Wenceslaus Hollar Wenzel Hollar - Tomb of Sir Simon Burley

Tomb of Sir Simon Burley

Wenzel Hollar original etching, "Tomb of Sir Simon Burley", is 'First State' impression printed upon mid 17th Century hand-made, laid paper and with full margins as published in Sir William Dugdale's "History of St. Paul's Cathedral" in 1658. Hollar designed the entire composition, rendering burley's coats-of-arms in the upper portion and depicting the actual architecture of the tomb. "Tomb of Sir Simon Burley" is signed in the plate by Wenzel Hollar, (Wenceslaus Hollar) along the lower margin.

Title: Tomb of Sir Simon Burley
Artist: Hollar, Wenceslaus 'Wenzel Hollar' (Prague, 1607 - London, 1677)
Date: 1658
Medium: Original Etching
Note: Wenzel Hollar 'Wenceslaus Hollar': One of Europe's greatest original etchers of the seventeenth century, Wenzel Hollar first studied under Matthaus Merian in Prague. Shortly after 1636, the touring Earl of Arundel employed Hollar as his topographical engraver, and later invited the artist to return to his English estate with him. With the exception of a one year absence, Wenzel Hollar spent the remainder of his life in England, leaving a masterful artistic record of the times and of his talents. Wenzel Hollar's art covers portrait, illustrative, costume, topographical and architectural subjects. Today he is regarded as a master etcher in all these fields.
Tomb of Sir Simon Burley was commissioned for Sir William Dugdale's, History of St. Paul's Cathedral, first published in 1658. Wenzel Hollar designed the entire composition, rendering burley's coats-of-arms in the upper portion and depicting the actual architecture of the tomb in St. Paul's in the remaining two thirds of the plate. Most of Hollar's art combines great detail and clarity with strong artistic effects and this original etching certainly is no exception.
Raisonne: Richard Pennington, A Descriptive Catalogue of The Etched Work of Wenceslaus Hollar, 1607 - 1677, Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1982. p. 343. Catalogue # 2254, First State of Two.
Pennington writes that a later edition of the Tomb of Sir Simon Burley (The Second State) was published. The later impressions are easy to identify as the number '102' contained in the upper left corner, has been changed to '104'.
