William Brassey Hole - "The New Arrival": This original etching was created by the Scottish genre and landscape artist, William Brassey Hole based upon a design created by the Edinburgh artist, Hugh Cameron. This impression is printed upon thick wove paper and with full, large margins as published by H. Virtue & Co. Ltd. for The Art Journal in 1902. An important late nineteenth and early twentieth century British annual, The Art Journal was dedicated to the visual arts. This impression bears the words, "The Art Journal, H. Virtue & Co. Ltd." printed above the etching as well as containing the words "Painted by Hugh Cameron R.S.A" and "Etched by William Hole R.S.A., R.E." and the title "The New Arrival" printed in the lower margin. William B. Hole's etching, "The New Arrival" depicts three children inspecting the new baby held in the loving arms of their grandmother. |

Note: | William Brassey Hole: A Scottish landscape etcher and painter, William Brassey Hole studied at the Royal Academy Schools, London. He began exhibiting his art there at the Royal Academy in 1873. Around 1875 the artist moved to Edinburgh and shortly thereafter became a member of both the Royal Scottish Academy (R.S.A) and the Royal Scottish Watercolour Society. William Brassey Hole was also a full member of the Royal Society of Painters and Etchers (R. E). |
As an etcher, William Hole was equally adept at landscape studies, historical depictions, architectural views, genre scenes and portraits, both after his own designs and those of his fellow Scottish artists. He was a frequent contributor to The Art Journal and The Portfolio, two important journals which concentrated upon the art of etching. He also illustrated a number of fine books with his original plates. | |
Hugh Cameron: A genre and portrait painter, Hugh Cameron studied art in Edinburgh, under Scott Lauder. He lived and worked in London from 1876 to 1888 and then returned to Edinburgh. Hugh Cameron was a full member of the Royal Scottish Academy (1869) and exhibited at the Royal Academy, London, from 1871 to 1892. Several of his finest works are included in the collection of the National Gallery of Scotland. | |
During his career, Hugh Cameron became best known for his genre scenes, particularly scenes of Scottish life. "The New Arrival" is typical of his fine art in this area. | |
