William Brassey Hole's original etching, "The End of the 'Forty Five' Rebellion" depicts the final chapter of the 1745 Highland Rebellion led by Prince Charles Edward and the retreat of his defeated troops. Fatigue, hunger and despair accompany the wounded troops. This original etching was created by the Scottish landscape etcher and painter, William B. Hole for the British Art Journal and is printed upon thick wove paper and with full, large margins as published in London by J.S. Virtue & Co. Limited in 1882. It is signed in the plate by the artist to the lower right and bearing the full publisher's address and title along the lower margin. Note: | William Brassey Hole: A Scottish landscape etcher and painter, William B. Hole studied at the Royal Academy Schools, London. He began exhibiting his art there at the Royal Academy in 1873. Around 1875 the artist moved to Edinburgh and shortly thereafter became a member of both the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Scottish Watercolour Society. He was also a full member of the Royal Society of Painters and Etchers. |
As an etcher, William Brassey Hole was equally adept at landscape studies, historical depictions, architectural views and portraits. He was a frequent contributor to The Art Journal and The Portfolio, two important journals which concentrated upon the art of etching. He also illustrated a number of fine books with his original plates. | |

The Art Journal was an important late nineteenth and early twentieth century British annual dedicated to the visual arts. Such leading artists as Axel Haig, J. M. W. Whistler, Seymour Haden, William Brassey Hole, Herbert Von Herkomer, Alfred Brunet-Debaines, John MacWhirter, Birket Foster and others contributed etched plates to The Art Journal, London over several decades. | |
