Note:	William Hogarth: The name of William Hogarth requires little in the way of an introduction. He is the unquestioned father of England's rich tradition of satire and remains one of the most original and lively minds in the entire history of British art. Famous for his paintings, Hogarth's engravings and etchings are even more paramount: the imagery from The Harlot's Progress, Marriage a la Mode, The Four Stages of Cruelty, The Four Times of the Day and a host of others are crucial to an understanding of eighteenth century art and culture. Yet William Hogarth's art stretched beyond his time and his masterful graphic art is as relevant to our society as they were to his.
	Training first as an engraver, William Hogarth became an independent illustrator as early as 1720. In his spare time he studied painting techniques, notably under Sir James Thornhill. By 1730 he established himself as a portrait painter. Yet at the same time Hogarth began creating sets of anecdotal pictures which brilliantly satirized society and its activities. The first such set, A Harlot's Progress (1732), gained for Hogarth a strong and lasting national reputation. During the following decades he both painted and engraved individual works and sets of images which forged the cornerstone for English satirical art. Such great masters as Rowlandson, Gillray, Heath and Cruikshank followed in William Hogarth's footsteps.
	Simon Lord Lovat: William Hogarth etched Simon Lord Lovat's portrait at an inn in St. Albans on his way to trail and eventual execution. Knowing what awaits him, Lovat is busy at work upon his memoirs. Hogarth has here created the almost archetypal portrait of a psychopath. Both his devious face and gestures show no trace of remorse. It is almost as if Lovat is saying, 'For almost eighty years I've thoroughly enjoyed murdering and plundering. Do with me what you will.' This is truly a masterpiece of character examination. Simon Lord Lovat ranks as one of the most intriguing portrait studies of any time. Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat (1667-1747) was truly a rogue's rogue. As a young man he had fought for King William and Mary but betrayed their cause and was outlawed for high treason in 1698. Several years later he secured his cousin's wealth and estate by brutally abducting and marrying his widow, for which he was again outlawed in 1701. During the following decades Lord Lovat participated in various revolutions and wars and was engaged in spying, espionage and counter-espionage. Many times, in fact, it was doubtful whose side he was on. After the defeat at the battle of Culloden he fled to an island in Loch Morar where he was discovered hiding in a hollow tree. Lovat was taken to London, tried, found guilty and sentenced to death in the Spring of 1747. He was the last man in England to be beheaded. It is reported that the crowds for his execution were so enormous that large scaffolds were constructed for the spectator's view. One such scaffold holding 400 people collapsed and instantly killed 20 onlookers. On being informed of this Lord Lovat smiled and said, "The more the mischief, the better the sport." He is also known to have tipped his executioner.

Condition:	Printed upon early nineteenth century wove paper and with full margins as published by William Heath in 1822. One should take note that Heath was the last printer to print directly from Hogarth's original engraved plates. All 'Hogarth' prints appearing after this date are merely copies of these original graphic works of art.
	Containing very faint foxing and smudging along the outer margins (well away from the actual engraving), else a finely printed impression and in very good condition throughout. Simon Lord Lovat represents a superb, original example of the famous engraved art of William Hogarth.
