William Hogarth's original engraving, "The Invasion: England" is the second plate from his set of two original engravings created in 1756. "The Invation" represents one of his most didactic sets of engravings. Created at the beginning of the French and Indian War (also termed the Seven Year's War) an invasion from France seemed probable. William Hogarth thus used this pair of engravings ("France" Plate I & "England" Plate II), to boost public morale. His friend, David Garrick, wrote the verses appearing along the lower margin of this engraving. Not surprisingly, "England" stands as a direct contrast to "France". Everyone in this engraving is healthy, happy and prosperous. Against a tavern's wall a soldier has drawn a caricature of the French King, who says, "You take my fine ships, you be de Pirate, you be de Teef, me send my grand Armies & hang you all, Morblu." The sign hanging on the tavern promises beef 'Roast & Boil'd every Day'. Thus a large beefsteak sits on the table along with a mug of beer. A sword rests upon the beef and a pistol sits atop the beer mug. The French will never taste England's prized produce. In the foreground a soldier boy plays 'God save great George our King.' To the right an undersized British man stands on his toes attempting to beat the measuring line for enlistment. Unlike the French, the English are eager to fight. In the background soldiers drill in an orderly manner. The Invasion: England (Plate Two) was both designed and engraved by William Hogarth. This original engraving and etching is printed upon early nineteenth century wove paper and with large, full margins as published by William Heath in 1822. It is a fine, original example of the satirical art created by the British artist, William Hogarth. The Invasion: England (Plate II); Paulson Catalogue # 203, Third and Final State. (Complete Set of Two Engravings). |

Note: | William Hogarth: The name of William Hogarth requires little in the way of an introduction. He is the unquestioned father of England's rich tradition of satire and remains one of the most original and lively minds in the entire history of British art. Famous for his paintings, William Hogarth's engravings are even more paramount: the imagery from "The Harlot's Progress", "Marriage a la Mode", "The Four Stages of Cruelty", "Four Prints of an Election", "The Four Times of the Day" and a host of others are crucial to an understanding of eighteenth century art and culture. Yet William Hogarth's art stretched beyond his time and his masterful engravings are as relevant to our society as they were to his. |
Training first as an engraver, William Hogarth became an independent illustrator as early as 1720. In his spare time he studied painting techniques, notably under Sir James Thornhill. By 1730 he established himself as a portrait painter. Yet at the same time Hogarth began creating sets of anecdotal pictures which brilliantly satirized society and its activities. The first such set, "A Harlot's Progress" (1732), gained for William Hogarth a strong and lasting national reputation. During the following decades he both painted and engraved individual works and sets of images which forged the cornerstone for English satirical art. Such great masters as George Rowlandson, James Gillray, William Heath and George Cruikshank followed in William Hogarth's footsteps. | |
The Invasion: England (Plate II): "The Invasion" represents one of William Hogarth's most didactic sets of engravings. Created at the beginning of the French and Indian War (also termed the Seven Year's War) an invasion from France seemed probable. William Hogarth thus used this pair of engravings ("France" Plate I & "England" Plate II), to boost public morale. His friend, David Garrick, wrote the verses appearing along the lower margin.
