William Hogarth - Industry and Idleness Plate 7 and 8 Idle Prentice Returned from Sea and Industrious Prentice is Sheriff

Industry and Idleness: Plate 7 & 8 (Idle Returns from the Sea & The Industrious Prentice is Sheriff)

The Idle Prentice Returned from the Sea, and in a Garret with a Common Prostitute
(William Hogarth's Industry and Idleness: Plate 7)
The Industrious Prentice Grown Rich, And Sheriff of London
(William Hogarth's Industry and Idleness: Plate 8)

This Scene stands as a direct comparison to William Hogarth's preceding engraving. Idle has now returned from the sea and has also found 'love', but in the mercenary arms of a common prostitute. The set of pistols on the floor indicates that he has again changed professions and has become a highwayman.

This original engraving entitled The Idle Prentice Returned from the Sea, and in a Garret with a Common Prostitute was both designed and engraved by William Hogarth and published by William Heath in 1822.

Industry and Idleness: Plate 7; Paulson #174, Second and Final State.

In Hogarth's eighth plate, the industrious prentice, Goodchild has grown rich. He assumes a major political post as the Sheriff of London. He is seen in the background, with his wife, presiding over the lavish banquet. In the foreground officials gorge on their food and drink.

This original engraving entitled The Industrious Prentice grown Rich, And Sheriff of London. was both designed and engraved by William Hogarth and published by William Heath in 1822.

Industry and Idleness: Plate 8; Paulson #175, Second and Final State.

Note: William Hogarth: The name of William Hogarth requires little in the way of an introduction. He is the unquestioned father of England's rich tradition of satire and remains one of the most original and lively minds in the entire history of British art. Famous for his paintings, Hogarth's engravings are even more paramount: the imagery from The Harlot's Progress, Marriage a la Mode, The Four Stages of Cruelty, Four Prints of an Election, The Four Times of the Day, Industry and Idleness and a host of others are crucial to an understanding of eighteenth century art and culture. Yet Hogarth's art stretched beyond his time and his masterful engravings are as relevant to our society as they were to his.
Training first as an engraver, Hogarth became an independent illustrator as early as 1720. In his spare time he studied painting techniques, notably under Sir James Thornhill. By 1730 he established himself as a portrait painter. Yet at the same time Hogarth began creating sets of anecdotal pictures which brilliantly satirized society and its activities. The first such set, A Harlot's Progress (1732), gained for Hogarth a strong and lasting national reputation. During the following decades he both painted and engraved individual works and sets of images which forged the cornerstone for English satirical art. Such great masters as Rowlandson, Gillray, Heath and Cruikshank followed in Hogarth's footsteps.
Industry and Idleness: Plate 7; Paulson #174, Second and Final State.
Industry and Idleness Plate 7 The Idle Prentice in a Garret by William Hogarth

The Idle Prentice Returned from the Sea, and in a Garret with a Common Prostitute stands as a direct comparison to William Hogarth's preceding engraving. Idle too has found 'love', but in the mercenary arms of a prostitute. The set of pistols on the floor indicates that he has again changed professions and has become a highwayman. The door to the shabby room is thoroughly locked and barricaded, indicating perhaps that he is on 'the run'. Idle is suddenly awakened by a cat chasing a rat down the chimney; his hair is on end and his face is ridden with fear. Oblivious, his companion admires the spoils of her night's work.

This is the third plate in which a cat has appeared. William Hogarth appears to be symbolizing aspects of Idle's character with this animal. Cats are alternately shiftless, irresponsible, violent, pleasure-seeking and untrustworthy -- all characteristics which fit the Idle Apprentice.

Industry and Idleness: Plate 8; Paulson #175, Second and Final State.
Industry and Idleness Plate 8 The Industrious Prentice grown Rich by William Hogarth

In The Industrious Prentice Grown Rich, And Sheriff of London, Goodchild now assumes a major political post. He is seen in the background, with his wife, presiding over the lavish banquet. In the foreground officials gorge on their food and drink. Hogarth never missed an opportunity to describe the sin of gluttony in full detail.

In its primary theme Industry and Idleness, is William Hogarth's most direct moral statement in series form. Its primary purpose is to illustrate the benefits of sincere and honest work and the ruinous path awaiting those who follow the opposite course. To this end Hogarth portrays the progress of two apprentices, Francis Goodchild and Thomas Idle. Their chosen paths and the consequences are chronicled in the twelve plates.
