The Idle Prentice at Play in the Church Yard, During Divine Service (William Hogarth's Industry and Idleness: Plate 3) |
The Industrious Prentice a Favourite, & Entrusted by his Master (William Hogarth's Industry and Idleness: Plate 4) |
In William Hogarth's third engraving, Tom Idle has neglected participation at the service in favour of gambling in the graveyard beside the church. The game actually takes place upon a grave and under Tom's reclining form the words, 'Here', 'Body' and 'Of', are visible. This original etching and engraving entitled, The Idle Prentice at Play in the Church Yard, During Divine Service was both designed and engraved by William Hogarth and published by William Heath in 1822. Industry and Idleness: Plate 3; Paulson #170, Second and Final State. |
In Hogarth's fourth engraving, Goodchild's ways are paying dividends. His clothes and wig illustrate his growing wealth. He has been promoted and befriended by his master, Mr. West, as symbolized by their joined gloves on the desk. Prosperity is clearly in evidence. This original etching and engraving entitled, The Industrious Prentice a Favourite, and Entrusted by his Master was both designed and engraved by William Hogarth and published by William Heath in 1822. Industry and Idleness: Plate 4; Paulson #171, Second and Final State. |

Note: | William Hogarth: The name of William Hogarth requires little in the way of an introduction. He is the unquestioned father of England's rich tradition of satire and remains one of the most original and lively minds in the entire history of British art. Famous for his paintings, Hogarth's engravings are even more paramount: the imagery from The Harlot's Progress, Marriage a la Mode, The Four Stages of Cruelty, Four Prints of an Election, The Four Times of the Day, Industry and Idleness and a host of others are crucial to an understanding of eighteenth century art and culture. Yet Hogarth's art stretched beyond his time and his masterful engravings are as relevant to our society as they were to his. |
Training first as an engraver, Hogarth became an independent illustrator as early as 1720. In his spare time he studied painting techniques, notably under Sir James Thornhill. By 1730 he established himself as a portrait painter. Yet at the same time Hogarth began creating sets of anecdotal pictures which brilliantly satirized society and its activities. The first such set, A Harlot's Progress (1732), gained for Hogarth a strong and lasting national reputation. During the following decades he both painted and engraved individual works and sets of images which forged the cornerstone for English satirical art. Such great masters as Rowlandson, Gillray, Heath and Cruikshank followed in Hogarth's footsteps.
Industry and Idleness: Plate 3; Paulson #170, Second and Final State.
In William Hogarth's The Idle Prentice at Play in the Church Yard, During Divine Service, Plate Three, Tom Idle has neglected participation at the service in favour of gambling in the graveyard beside the church. The game actually takes place upon a grave and under Tom's reclining form the words, 'Here', 'Body' and 'Of', are visible. Thus the Idle Apprentice may very well be sitting upon his own grave. He attempts to cover his money with his hat, dangerously inviting the wrath of the three disgusting players to the right. Behind him a beadle unsuccessfully attempts to beat some sense into him. In the background decent human beings enter the church.
Industry and Idleness: Plate 4; Paulson #171, Second and Final State.
In Hogarth's The Industrious Prentice a Favourite, & Entrusted by his Master Plate Four, Goodchild's ways are paying dividends. His clothes and wig illustrate his growing wealth. He has been promoted and befriended by his master, Mr. West, as symbolized by their joined gloves on the desk. To the left a porter from the city of London delivers cloth. Idle is nowhere to be seen and in his place a row of women work upon their looms. Prosperity is clearly in evidence. The industrious prentice is visibly a favourite, and entrusted by his master. In its primary theme Industry and Idleness is William Hogarth's most direct moral statement in series form. Its primary purpose is to illustrate the benefits of sincere and honest work and the ruinous path awaiting those who follow the opposite course. To this end Hogarth portrays the progress of two apprentices, Francis Goodchild and Thomas Idle. Their chosen paths and the consequences are chronicled in the twelve plates. |
