The Fellow Prentices at their Looms (William Hogarth's Industry and Idleness: Plate 1) |
The Industrious Prentice Performing the Duty of a Christian (William Hogarth's Industry and Idleness: Plate 2) |
In this scene, William Hogarth portrays the two apprentices as they begin their journey on an entirely equal footing. Both begin at the same shop and under identical circumstances. Francis Goodchild, the Industrious apprentice, sits to the right. He is diligently at work upon his loom and beside him rests a well preserved copy of 'The Prentices Loom". To the left (and fast asleep) is the Idle apprentice, Thomas Idle. This original engraving entitled, The Fellow Prentices at their Looms was both designed and engraved by William Hogarth and published by William Heath in 1822. Industry and Idleness: Plate 1; Paulson #168, Second and Final State. |
The second and third scenes outline the apprentices' attitudes towards religion. In HOgarth's Plate Two, Goodchild performs his religious duties as a Christian in the same dedicated manner as his work. Besides him is the daughter of his master. To the left a pew opener sits with her back towards the ceremony. For the most part the congregation is attentive and well behaved. This original engraving entitled, The Industrious Prentice Performing the Duty of a Christian was both designed and engraved by William Hogarth and published by William Heath in 1822. Industry and Idleness: Plate 2; Paulson #169, Second and Final State. |

Note: | William Hogarth: The name of William Hogarth requires little in the way of an introduction. He is the unquestioned father of England's rich tradition of satire and remains one of the most original and lively minds in the entire history of British art. Famous for his paintings, Hogarth's engravings are even more paramount: the imagery from The Harlot's Progress, Marriage a la Mode, The Four Stages of Cruelty, Four Prints of an Election, The Four Times of the Day, Industry and Idleness and a host of others are crucial to an understanding of eighteenth century art and culture. Yet Hogarth's art stretched beyond his time and his masterful engravings are as relevant to our society as they were to his. |
Training first as an engraver, Hogarth became an independent illustrator as early as 1720. In his spare time he studied painting techniques, notably under Sir James Thornhill. By 1730 he established himself as a portrait painter. Yet at the same time Hogarth began creating sets of anecdotal pictures which brilliantly satirized society and its activities. The first such set, A Harlot's Progress (1732), gained for Hogarth a strong and lasting national reputation. During the following decades he both painted and engraved individual works and sets of images which forged the cornerstone for English satirical art. Such great masters as Rowlandson, Gillray, Heath and Cruikshank followed in Hogarth's footsteps.
Industry and Idleness: Plate 1; Paulson #168, Second and Final State.
In The Fellow Prentices at their Looms, Plate One, William Hogarth portrays the two apprentices as they begin their journey on an entirely equal footing. A cat plays with his working equipment. Symbols of his dissolute life already surround him -- a mug of ale from 'Spittle Fields', a pipe at rest on the motionless loom and a page from Moll Flanders tacked on the post above his head. This, of course, refers to Defoe's famous novel concerning a promiscuous serving girl. To the extreme right the master enters, cane in hand. His expression registers frustration with his idle apprentice. In the outside framework William Hogarth engraves symbols of the future. To the left we see a hangman's rope and manacles. To the right the sword of state and the mace of the city of London are delineated. |

Industry and Idleness: Plate 2; Paulson #169, Second and Final State.
The second and third scenes outline the apprentices' attitudes towards religion. In The Industrious Prentice Performing the Duty of a Christian, Plate Two, Goodchild performs his religious duties in the same dedicated manner as his work. Besides him is the daughter of his master. To the left a pew opener sits with her back towards the ceremony. For the most part the congregation is attentive and well behaved. Only the snoring figure behind the industrious apprentice reminds us of William Hogarth's more biting studies of church life such as, The Sleepy Congregation and Credulity, Superstition and Fanaticism. In its primary theme Industry and Idleness, is William Hogarth's most direct moral statement in series form. Its primary purpose is to illustrate the benefits of sincere and honest work and the ruinous path awaiting those who follow the opposite course. To this end Hogarth portrays the progress of two apprentices, Francis Goodchild and Thomas Idle. Their chosen paths and the consequences are chronicled in the twelve plates. |
