William Hogarth's "Illustrations for Samuel Butler's 'Hudibras' Plate 7 Hudibras Encounters the Skimmington": This engraving, as well as (plate 11), are significantly larger than the other ten engravings. Both depict crowd scenes and bear similarities to Hogarth's later works of art such as, "The March to Finchley" and "The Idle Prentice Executed at Tyburn". A 'Skimmington' was an old custom in rural England and Scotland directed at either nagging wives or unfaithful husbands. An unruly procession was formed for the purpose of ridiculing the offender. In cases of 'hen-pecking' the man would ride behind the woman while she beat him about the jowls with a ladle. This is seen to the left of the image. Hudibras, to the right, misinterprets the festivities as an unholy, anti-Christian ceremony.
Some scenes, like the boy putting a torch to the squire's horse, are from the poem. The man urinating against the wall, the figure tossing the cat and the boy stealing sausages from Hudibras, however, are Hogarth's. With variations they will appear in later engravings, such as, "The Four Stages of Cruelty". Illustrations for Samuel Butler's 'Hudibras' is William Hogarth's first published set of original engravings initially published in 1725. "Hudibras Encounters the Skimmington" (Plate 7), is an original engraving printed upon early nineteenth century wove paper and with large, full margins as published for the final Heath edition in 1822. "Hudibras Encounters the Skimmington" (Plate VII); Paulson Catalogue #79, Third and Final State. This engraving, as well as (Hudibras, plate 11), are significantly larger than the other ten engravings. (Complete Set of Twelve Original Engravings On Seven large Sheets of Paper). |

Note: | William Hogarth: The name of William Hogarth requires little in the way of an introduction. He is the unquestioned father of England's rich tradition of satire and remains one of the most original and lively minds in the entire history of British art. Famous for his paintings, William Hogarth's engravings are even more paramount: the imagery from "The Harlot's Progress", "Marriage a la Mode", "The Four Stages of Cruelty", "Four Prints of an Election", "The Four Times of the Day" and a host of others are crucial to an understanding of eighteenth century art and culture. Yet William Hogarth's art stretched beyond his time and his masterful engravings are as relevant to our society as they were to his. |
Training first as an engraver, William Hogarth became an independent illustrator as early as 1720. In his spare time he studied painting techniques, notably under Sir James Thornhill. By 1730 he established himself as a portrait painter. Yet at the same time, William Hogarth began creating sets of anecdotal pictures which brilliantly satirized society and its activities. One early set, "A Harlot's Progress" (1732), gained for Hogarth a strong and lasting national reputation. During the following decades he both painted and engraved individual works and sets of images which forged the cornerstone for English satirical art. Such great masters as Thomas Rowlandson, James Gillray, William Heath and George Cruikshank followed in William Hogarth's footsteps.
Illustrations for Samuel Butler's 'Hudibras' is William Hogarth's first published set of original engravings. Initially published in an edition of about two hundred impressions in 1725, these original engravings were printed for the final edition in 1822. "Hudibras Encounters the Skimmington" is the seventh plate from this set.
Samuel Butler (1612-1680) was an English poet who is best remembered for his three part epic, 'Hudibras', published in 1663, 1664 and 1678. 'Hudibras' satirizes the hypocrisy and pomposity of seventeenth century Puritanism. Throughout his life, William Hogarth was drawn to this theme and expressed his concerns about religious fanaticism in such individual plates as "Credulity, Superstition and Fanaticism". 'Hudibras', however, is a far reaching work of satire and many of the themes and elements within the writings of Samuel Butler had a lifelong influence upon the art of William Hogarth. Hogarth's engraved plates for Hudibras often foreshadow elements of his later work, and are thus of great importance.
