In William Hogarth's "The Five Orders of Perriwigs as they were Worn at the Late Coronation Measured Architectomically" he satirizes both fashion and scholarship. It caricatures the popular eighteenth century notion that one could construct laws of composition and models of beauty from the measuring ancient statues and columns and applies this shaky model to the ridiculous hair styles of the times. William Hogarth divides the periwigs into five categories that parody the five orders of Palladian architectural rules, the Doric, Ionic, Corinthian, Composite and Tuscan. The equivalents William Hogarth fashions are Episcopal (the clergy), Old Peerian or Aldermanic (city officials and peers), Lexonic (lawyers), Composite or Half Natural and 'Queerinthian'. The final category is derived from 'Corinthian' and represents the most ornate and effete. This original engraving was both designed and engraved by the British satirical artist, William Hogarth. This impression was published by William Heath in 1822. |

Note: | William Hogarth: The name of William Hogarth requires little in the way of an introduction. He is the unquestioned father of England's rich tradition of satire and remains one of the most original and lively minds in the entire history of British art. Famous for his paintings, Hogarth's engravings are even more paramount: the imagery from "The Harlot's Progress", "Marriage a la Mode", "The Four Stages of Cruelty", "Four Prints of an Election", "The Four Times of the Day" and a host of others are crucial to an understanding of eighteenth century art and culture. Yet Hogarth's art stretched beyond his time and his masterful engravings are as relevant to our society as they were to his. |
Training first as an engraver, Hogarth became an independent illustrator as early as 1720. In his spare time he studied painting techniques, notably under Sir James Thornhill. By 1730 he established himself as a portrait painter. Yet at the same time Hogarth began creating sets of anecdotal pictures which brilliantly satirized society and its activities. The first such set, "A Harlot's Progress" (1732), gained for Hogarth a strong and lasting national reputation. During the following decades he both painted and engraved individual works and sets of images which forged the cornerstone for English satirical art. Such great masters as Rowlandson, Gillray, Heath and Cruikshank followed in Hogarth's footsteps. | |

William Hogarth divides the periwigs into five categories that parody the five orders of Palladian architectural rules, the Doric, Ionic, Corinthian, Composite and Tuscan. The equivalents Hogarth fashions are Episcopal (the clergy), Old Peerian or Aldermanic (city officials and peers), Lexonic (lawyers), Composite or Half Natural and 'Queerinthian'. The final category is derived from 'Corinthian' and represents the most ornate and effete. For each of these orders Hogarth produces measuring lines and, to the left, a "Scale" showing the units of "Athenian Measure". Each wig is further divided into architectural parts according to those of a capital, ranging from the letter A to the letter I. The ultimate absurdity of such measuring and classification is found in the third order to the extreme right where a wig is delineated to such an extent that it assumes the distinct appearance of a sheep's rump. In actuality a sixth order completes this wonderful engraving along the bottom. To the left Hogarth portrays the face of Queen Charlotte. The remaining women sport various coronets as their male counterparts display their periwigs. At first glance the elaborate coiffures portrayed in "The Five Orders of Perriwigs" might seem a bit exaggerated. The coronation of George III and Queen Charlotte took place about three weeks before Hogarth created this work. Horace Walpole attended the ceremonies and wrote, "Some of the peeresses were dressed over night, slept in armchairs, and were waked if they tumbled their heads" * . |

Condition: | Printed upon early nineteenth century wove paper as published by William Heath in 1822. One should take note that Heath was the last printer to print directly from Hogarth's original engraved plates. All 'Hogarth' prints appearing after this date are merely copies of these original graphic works of art. |
This original impression bears large margins on three sides and small margins along the upper side, else a finely printed impression and in very good condition throughout. Altogether, "The Five Orders of Perriwigs" represents a prime, original example of the engraved art of William Hogarth. | |
