William Hogarth & Bernard Baron - Evening (Four Times of The Day): The scene for Evening is Sadlers Wells, the popular amusement centre for London's middle class. The dominant foreground figure is the large, probably pregnant, wife. Beside her walks a diminutive and meek looking husband, carrying one of their children. Behind them a cow is being milked. It is no coincidence that the horns of the animal have aligned themselves atop the husband's head -- a sure symbol of a cuckolded man. Their other two children, a boy and a girl, appear in the background. Their dominant and submissive actions no doubt mirror those of their parents.

The Four Times of the Day was first published by William Hogarth in 1738. Three plates from the set were both designed and engraved by him. The remaining plate, Evening, was designed by William Hogarth but engraved by Bernard Baron, a French engraver who resided in London. The Four Times of the Day delineates London life and entertainments and ranks as one of Hogarth's greatest sets

An original engrav ing, Evening was designed by William Hogarth and engraved by Bernard Baron. It is printed upon early nineteenth century wove paper and with large, full margins as published by William Heath in 1822. Note:	William Hogarth: The name of William Hogarth requires little in the way of an introduction. He is the unquestioned father of England's rich tradition of satire and remains one of the most original and lively minds in the entire history of British art. Famous for his paintings, Hogarth's engravings are even more paramount: the imagery from The Harlot's Progress, Marriage a la Mode, The Four Stages of Cruelty, The Four Times of the Day and a host of others are crucial to an understanding of eighteenth century art and culture. Yet, William Hogarth's art stretched beyond his time and his masterful engravings are as relevant to our society as they were to his.
	Training first as an engraver, William Hogarth became an independent illustrator as early as 1720. In his spare time he studied painting techniques, notably under Sir James Thornhill. By 1730 he had established himself as a portrait painter. Yet at the same time Hogarth began creating sets of anecdotal pictures which brilliantly satirized society and its activities. The first such set, A Rake's Progress (1731), gained for Hogarth a strong and lasting national reputation. During the following decades he both painted and engraved individual works and sets of images which forged the cornerstone for English satirical art. Such great masters as Rowlandson, Gillray, Heath and Cruikshank followed in Hogarth's footsteps.
	Bernard Baron (1700? - 1766) was a Frenchman who studied under Nicholas Tardieu. He came to England c. 1720 with Du Bosc to assist with the engravings of "The Duke of Marlborough's Battles," and went on to engrave Thornhill's frescoes from St. Paul's, the Raphael Cartoons, and the works of Rubens, Titian, Van Dyck, Watteau, Gravelot, Kneller, and D. Teniers. Bernard Baron remained in England until his death, making only one brief visit to Paris in 1729 to engrave a plate after Watteau (Vertue 341). Bernard Baron engraved for Hogarth, Bishop Hoadly (Paulson # 266), Four Times of the Day, Pl. 3 (Paulson #166), and Marriage a la Mode, Pls. 2 and 3 (Paulson #269 and #270), Baron also made engravings after William Hogarth's paintings of John Palmer (1749) and Archbishop Herring (1750).

Condition:	Printed upon early nineteenth century wove paper and with large, full margins as published by William Heath in 1822. One should take note that Heath was the last publisher to print directly from Hogarth's original engraved plates. All 'Hogarth' prints appearing after this date are merely copies of these original graphic works of art.
	These original impressions from the complete set of The Four Times of the Day contain very slight foxing and water staining along the outer margins (well away from the actual engravings), else each is a finely printed impression and in excellent condition throughout. The Four Times of the Day represents a superb, original example of the famous engraved art of William Hogarth.
