William Hogarth & Charles Grignion - Canvassing for Votes (Four Prints of an Election, Plate 2): Hogarth's second scene takes political corruption out of doors. The inn to the right is The Royal Oak, which was the headquarters of the Tory party. The inn has been embellished with signs satirizing their opponents, the most notable bearing the title of, "Punch Candidate for Guzzeldown", which shows a Whig candidate as Punch buying votes from his wheelbarrow of coins. Below the sign stands the local Tory candidate. Much like 'Punch', he is buying trinkets from the peddlers to further his amorous adventures with the admiring pair of girls on the balcony. At the Inn door a soldier spies on another attractive girl who is busy counting her 'take'. At the bay window two men stuff themselves on ridiculously large portions of food. The centre foreground is dominated by a closely knit trio of men. The man in the middle is covertly accepting bribes from both men at the same time. At the table to the left two elderly men debate the Battle of Portobello. The pensive, pipe-smoking man appears to have won his wager and takes in his money. In the background a Tory mob is attacking the Whig headquarters. Extreme violence has already commenced. Four Prints of an Election consists of four related engravings published by William Hogarth from February, 1755 to February, 1758. It represents Hogarth's last great set of engravings and is loosely based upon the riotous Oxfordshire election of 1754, where the Whig candidate, the Duke of Marlborough, challenged the incumbent Tories. As in most of Hogarth's works of art, however, the series is not concerned with a particular event but aims to uncover political and aristocratic methods to bribe, coerce and generally exploit the populace. Thus this eighteenth century election shares many similar chords with our contemporary politicians and voters. William Hogarth engraved plate 1 by himself and assisted other engravers in plates 3 and 4. For mainly background work, however, he commissioned the technical expertise of other engravers working in London to complete the series. They are, Charles Grignion, the Elder (born, 1717 - died, 1810), (plate 2), Francois Morellon de la Cave 'Le Cave' (1706-1766;fl), (plate 3), and Francois Antoine Aveline 'F. Aviline' (Paris, 1718/27? - London, 1780), (plate 4). Canvassing for Votes, Four Prints of an Election, Plate 2 was engraved by William Hogarth and Charles Grignion. This original engraving is printed upon early nineteenth century wove paper and with large, full margins as published by William Heath in 1822. Note: | William Hogarth: The name of William Hogarth requires little in the way of an introduction. He is the unquestioned father of England's rich tradition of satire and remains one of the most original and lively minds in the entire history of British art. Famous for his paintings, Hogarth's engravings are even more paramount: the imagery from The Harlot's Progress, Marriage a la Mode, The Four Stages of Cruelty, Four Prints of an Election, The Four Times of the Day and a host of others are crucial to an understanding of eighteenth century art and culture. Yet Hogarth's art stretched beyond his time and his masterful engravings are as relevant to our society as they were to his. |
Training first as an engraver, Hogarth became an independent illustrator as early as 1720. In his spare time he studied painting techniques, notably under Sir James Thornhill. By 1730 he established himself as a portrait painter. Yet at the same time Hogarth began creating sets of anecdotal pictures which brilliantly satirized society and its activities. The first such set, A Harlot's Progress (1732), gained for Hogarth a strong and lasting national reputation. During the following decades he both painted and engraved individual works and sets of images which forged the cornerstone for English satirical art. Such great masters as Rowlandson, Gillray, Heath and Cruikshank followed in Hogarth's footsteps. | |
Charles Grignion, the Elder (1717 - 1810) An 18th century British engraver and illustrator, Charles Grignion the first was born in london in 1810. He was a member of the committee for the Royal Academy foundation. Grignion was best known for his historical engravings and illustrations, such as his anatomical plates for Albinus' work (1757), A View of the Canal, Chinese Building, Rotundo in Ranelagh Gardens, with the Masquerade after Canaletto (c. 1750), Dalton's designs for Antique statues, plates for the Vatican tapestries (1753), and in collaboration with William Hogarth, he engraved Canvassing for Votes from Four Prints of an Election (1757 and Garrick in the role of Richard III, as well as many other works of art. Charles Grignion, the Elder died at the age of ninety three in 1810 in Kentish Town, originally a chapelry of St. Pancras at that time. He was the father of the engraver and painter, Charles Grignion II (London, 1754 - Leghorn, 1804). | |

One should take note that Heath was the last printer to print directly from Hogarth's original engraved plates. All 'Hogarth' prints appearing after this date are merely copies of these original graphic works of art. |
These original impressions from the complete set of Four Prints of an Election contain very faint foxing in the outer margins. There is no foxing within the actual platemarks. Water staining is also apparent in the lower left corners of the margins, well away from the actual engravings. Else, each of these large and important Hogarth engravings is in good condition throughout. | |
