Characters Caricaturas

William Hogarth's original engraving, "Characters Caricaturas" was first created as an elaborate subscription ticket for his famous set of engravings, "Marriage a la Mode". It proved popular in its own right and thus Hogarth cut off the receipt portion to constitute its present state. Like "Analysis of Beauty" and "Boys Peeping at Nature" it represents a statement by Hogarth upon the nature of his art. To the lower right of this engraving Hogarth writes, "See ye Preface to Jo". Andrews. This refers to Henry Fielding's novel, Joseph Andrews. In this work Fielding defines the difference between caricatura, or the burlesque, and character, or comic-history. The former category allows all license and exaggeration where the latter category demands craftsmanship and attention to realism. In character, the reader or spectator must use his intellectual faculties to detect any subtle irregularities of nature.

Characters Caricaturas was both designed and engraved by William Hogarth. This original engraving and etching is printed upon early nineteenth century wove paper and with large, full margins as published by William Heath in 1822. Note:	William Hogarth: The name of William Hogarth requires little in the way of an introduction. He is the unquestioned father of England's rich tradition of satire and remains one of the most original and lively minds in the entire history of British art. Famous for his paintings, Hogarth's engravings are even more paramount: the imagery from The Harlot's Progress, Marriage a la Mode, The Four Stages of Cruelty, Four Prints of an Election, The Four Times of the Day and a host of others are crucial to an understanding of eighteenth century art and culture. Yet Hogarth's art stretched beyond his time and his masterful engravings are as relevant to our society as they were to his.
	Training first as an engraver, Hogarth became an independent illustrator as early as 1720. In his spare time he studied painting techniques, notably under Sir James Thornhill. By 1730 he established himself as a portrait painter. Yet at the same time Hogarth began creating sets of anecdotal pictures which brilliantly satirized society and its activities. The first such set, A Harlot's Progress (1732), gained for Hogarth a strong and lasting national reputation. During the following decades he both painted and engraved individual works and sets of images which forged the cornerstone for English satirical art. Such great masters as Rowlandson, Gillray, Heath and Cruikshank followed in Hogarth's footsteps.

Fielding writes, "He who should call the Ingenious Hogarth a Burlesque Painter, would, in my Opinion, do him very little Honour; for sure it is much easier, much less the Subject of Admiration, to paint a Man with a Nose, or any other Feature of a preposterous Size, or to expose him in some absurd or monstrous Attitude, than to express the Affections of Men on Canvas. It hath been thought a vast Commendation of a Painter, to say his Figures seem to breathe; but surely, it is a much greater and nobler Applause, that they appear to think. * In the lower part of Characters Caricaturas, William Hogarth has split the image into these two divisions. To the left, under 'Characters', appear portrayals from the art of Raphael. To the right, under 'Caricaturas', we see distorted images composed by such artists as Ghezzi, Carracci and da Vinci as well as a childish scribble. Above these divisions Hogarth has engraved over one hundred heads bearing much more in common with Raphael's portraits than the Caricaturas. Many of these heads appear in Marriage a la Mode. Thus William Hogarth firmly places himself in the superior camp of 'Character'.

Condition:	Printed upon early nineteenth century wove paper as published by William Heath in 1822. One should take note that Heath was the last printer to print directly from Hogarth's original engraved plates. All 'Hogarth' prints appearing after this date are merely copies of these original graphic works of art.
	This original impression bears large margins on three sides and small margins along the lower edge, else a finely printed impression and in very good condition throughout. Altogether, Characters Caricaturas represents a prime, original example of the engraved art of William Hogarth.
