Note: Utagawa Hiroshige I: Undoubtedly, the two greatest masters of Japanese landscape art are Hiroshige and Hokusai. Hiroshige --perhaps the most lyrical landscape artist of any time -- was born into a low ranking Samurai family in the capital city of Edo. He became a pupil of Toyohiro at the age of fifteen and studied the art of the Utagawa School. He started his career as a book illustrator and then turned to portrayals of beautiful women. It wasn't until seeing Hokusai's Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji that Hiroshige turned to his famous landscape art.
During his productive career Hiroshige designed about 10,000 single sheet woodcuts as well as several hundred illustrations for books. Woman Fulling Cloth dates from the first phase of Hiroshige's creative art. His first independent prints were published around 1817 and, for the following fifteen years his imagery usually followed the artistic conventions of the day. His art, of course, changed dramatically in 1832 when Utagawa Hiroshige I undertook his first journey to Kyoto. As a result his monumental Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido was created.
In the 1820's Utagawa Hiroshige I designed a series of eight woodcuts, each of which dealt with a visual comparison of women with scenery. This original Hiroshige woodcut may belong to this series, as the woman's physical motions are mirrored by the wind swept, swaying reeds behind her. "Woman Fulling Cloth" is a brilliant, early woodcut befitting one of Japan's greatest masters. A Haiku poem is located in the upper margins. The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston includes an impression of this original woodcut in its permanent collection, Accession Number: 21.7858.
