Utagawa Hiroshige I

Utagawa Hiroshige I - Wild Geese Flying Across a Crescent Moon Mikazuki ni gan

Wild Geese Flying Across a Crescent Moon (Mikazuki ni gan)

This original Utagawa Hiroshige I woodcut, "Wild Geese Flying Across a Crescent Moon (Mikazuki ni gan)" is a masterpiece of his koban sized kacho-e. It is printed upon early 19th century Japanese mulberry paper, bearing the artist's red 'Ichiryusai' seal under his signature of 'Hiroshige ga'. "Three geese flying across the Crescent moon" is one of the traditional symbols of the beginning of autumn in Japan and Hiroshige produced at least three woodcuts dedicated to this imagery. Utagawa Hiroshige I designed single sheet woodcuts as well as illustrations for books during his productive career. Depictions of birds, flowers, insects and animals range in size from Kakemono-e to koban. Almost all were created between 1830 and 1840. A number of these great works also contain accompanying poetry, particularly in the Haiku form.

Date: c. 1835
Medium: Original Japanese Woodcut

Note:

“Hiroshige died in 1858, only ten years before the historical end of the Edo period. With him passed the special vision of the natural world that he gave the Ukiyo-e image. No one who has admired plums or camellias blooming in the snow, or geese silhouetted against a full moon on an autumn night, can mistake the poetic spirit that imbues Hiroshige's kacho-e images for anything less than the natural splendour they portray.” *

  Undoubtedly, the two greatest masters of Japanese landscape art and woodcuts of birds and flowers (kacho-e) are An original Japanese woodcut by Utagawa Hiroshige I and Hokusai. Utagawa Hiroshige I --perhaps the most lyrical landscape artist of any time -- was born into a low ranking Samurai family in the capital city of Edo. He became a pupil of Toyohiro at the age of fifteen and studied the art of the Utagawa School. He started his career as a book illustrator and then turned to portrayals of beautiful women. It wasn't until seeing Hokusai's Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji that Utagawa Hiroshige turned to his famous landscape art.
  During his productive career An original Japanese woodcut by Utagawa Hiroshige I designed about 10,000 single sheet woodcuts as well as several hundred illustrations for books. Depictions of birds, flowers, insects and animals total almost 500. These range in size from Kakemono-e (double oban) to koban (quarter block). Almost all were created between 1830 and 1840. A number of these great works also contain accompanying poetry, particularly in the Haiku form. Both the Museum of Modern Art, Boston, Accession Number: 218602, and the RISD Museum of Art, include an impression of theis original woodcut in its permanent collections, Collection: Asian Art (1484).

"Wild Geese Flying Across a Crescent Moon (Mikazuki ni gan)" is a masterpiece of Utagawa Hiroshige's koban sized kacho-e. As with his great landscape art, so much is suggested with so little. Three geese flying across the moon is one of the traditional symbols of the beginning of autumn in Japan and Hiroshige produced at least three woodcuts dedicated to this imagery. On another such woodcut he included the following Haiku poem;

Komo na yo ga -- Will it come again
Mata mo aro ka -- another night like this one?
Tsuki ni kari. -- Wild Geese and the Moon.
