This original woodcut by Utagawa Hiroshige I, "Numazu" hails from the Gojusan-tsugi no Uchi (The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido Road). Hiroshige's first series of views of the fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido was published in 1834. During the following years this great artist produced many amazing woodcuts of views in and around Edo, Osaka, Ohmi and Kyoto. Yet, almost until his death, he kept returning to the spiritual landscape scenes of the Tokaido Road, and created a number of famous series of the fifty-three stations in both chuban and oban sizes. The chuban sized woodcuts of Tokaido Gojusan tsugi no Uchi are also well known as the Kyoka Tokaido (Tokaido with Poem), because each woodcut includes a Kyoka poem. Published in 1840, they showcase Utagawa Hiroshige's landscape art at its best. Numazu is the thirteenth station on the Tokaido Road. It, along with the fourteenth station, is important because of its proximity to Fuji, Japan's greatest mountain and religious icon. With its brilliant portrayal of Mt. Fuji, this original Tokaido Road woodcut represents a prime example of the famous landscape art of Utagawa Hiroshige I.

Note:	Utagawa Hiroshige I: Undoubtedly, the two greatest masters of Japanese landscape art are Hiroshige and Hokusai. Hiroshige --perhaps the most lyrical landscape artist of any time -- was born into a low ranking Samurai family in the capital city of Edo. He became a pupil of Toyohiro at the age of fifteen and also studied the art of the Utagawa School. He started his career as a book illustrator and then turned to portrayals of beautiful women. It wasn't until seeing Hokusai's Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji that Hiroshige turned almost exclusively to his famous landscape art.
	As Hokusai's art is forever linked with the landscape of Mt. Fuji, Hiroshige's art will always be best remembered for his scenes along the Tokaido Road. This was the 490 kilometer route that joined the two great capitals of Kyoto and Edo (Tokyo), and formed a sacred pilgrimage of fifty-three stages or places for all who traveled it.
	Utagawa Hiroshige's first series of views of the fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido was published in 1834. During the following years this great artist produced many amazing woodcuts of views in and around Edo, Osaka, Ohmi and Kyoto. Yet, almost until his death, he kept returning to the spiritual landscape scenes of the Tokaido Road, and created a number of famous series of the fifty-three stations in both chuban and oban sizes.
	The chuban sized woodcuts of the Tokaido Gojusan-tsugi no Uchi, also spelt (Tokaido Gojusantsugi no uchi) are also well known as the Kyoka Tokaido, because each woodcut includes a Kyoka poem. Published in 1840, they showcase Hiroshige's landscape art at its best. Numazu is the thirteenth station on the Tokaido Road. It, along with the fourteenth station, is important because of its proximity to Fuji, Japan's greatest mountain and religious icon. In Numazu, Utagawa Hiroshige I creates monumental landscape view dominated by subtle tones of greys and blues. Pilgrims journey along the road in the foreground; to the right is a tea-house and trees. A farmer tends his crop in the rice-fields behind them. In the distance, foothills give way to the majestic peak of Fuji which is partly enshrouded in cloud. As in most of Hiroshige's classic landscape art, so much is suggested with so little.

Condition:	Printed upon early nineteenth century Japanese mulberry (rice) paper and with full margins as published by Sanoki in 1840 for the series: Tokaido Gojusan tsugi no Uchi (The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido Road). Strengthened with an extra sheet of mulberry backing by a previous owner. Containing small silk worm holes and some creasing and rubbing, else this original woodcut of Namazu is a a very good impression bearing all the vibrant colours, woodgrain and fine lines of a very early printing. With its brilliant portrayal of Mt. Fuji, this original Tokaido Road woodcut represents a prime example of the famous landscape art of Utagawa Hiroshige I.
