An original woodcut by Utagawa Hiroshige I & Utagawa Kunisada I (Toyokuni III), "Biwa-Hoshi On The Tokaido Road Near Maisaka" is printed upon mid nineteenth century Japanese mulberry paper and with full margins as published by Maruya Kishuro between 1854 and 1857 for the series: Sohitsu gojusan tsugi (The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido by two Brushes). In the foreground, Kunisada has depicted a grouping of three 'Biwa-Hoshi'. These were blind minstrels who made their livings by playing the stringed instrument known as the biwa. This original woodcut is #31 of the series and deals with the station of Maisaka. In the background Hiroshige has depicted a beautiful view of Hamanako Lagoon. The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido by Two Brushes represents one of the finest collaborative efforts by two master artists in the history of the Japanese woodcut. The 'two brushes' were, of course, Utagawa Hiroshige I and Utagawa Kunisada I (Toyokuni III), who worked on this series of 53 prints from 1854 through 1857. |

Utagawa Hiroshige I: Undoubtedly, the two greatest masters of Japanese landscape art are Hiroshige and Hokusai. Hiroshige --perhaps the most lyrical landscape artist of any time -- was born into a low ranking samurai family in the capital city of Edo. He became a pupil of Toyohiro at the age of fifteen and also studied the art of the Utagawa School. He started his career as a book illustrator and then turned to portrayals of beautiful women. It wasn't until seeing Hokusai's Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji that Hiroshige turned almost exclusively to his famous landscape art.
As Hokusai's art is forever linked with the landscape of Mt. Fuji, Hiroshige's art will always be best remembered for his scenes along the Tokaido Road. This was the 490 kilometer route that joined the two great capitals of Kyoto and Edo (Tokyo), and formed a sacred pilgrimage of fifty-three stages or places for all who traveled it. Hiroshige's first series of views of the fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido was published in 1834. During the following years this great artist produced many amazing woodcuts of views in and around Edo, Osaka, Ohmi and Kyoto. Yet, almost until his death, he kept returning to the spiritual landscape scenes of the Tokaido Road.
Utagawa Kunisada I (Toyokuni III): Perhaps the best known printmaking artist of his day, Kunisada apprenticed under Toyokuni. Kunisada's earliest woodcuts date from 1809 and he quickly established himself as a master of figure and character studies. Because of his chronological changes of signatures, Kunisada's woodcuts are not difficult to date: his first works were signed, 'Ichiyusai Kunisada', and bear the definite influence of his master. About 1813, he began inscribing his woodcuts, 'Gototei Kunisada', and from 1827, he adopted the 'go' or 'ga' suffix. Finally, in 1844, he took his deceased master's name -- a not uncommon practice in Japanese art -- and signed his works, 'Toyokuni'. This original woodcut is thus signed, 'Toyokuni'.
When the Western world first discovered the artistic value of the Japanese woodcut (c. 1865) it was the designs of Kunisada which primarily attracted the greatest attention. His superb use of line, form and colour influenced an entire legion of European artists. Toulouse-Lautrec, Whistler, Van Gogh, Vuillard, Bonnard and many others all owed a considerable deal to the splendid creations of this Japanese master of the woodcut.
Sohitsu gojusan tsugi (The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido by two Brushes) represents one of the finest collaborative efforts by two master artists in the history of the Japanese woodcut. The 'two brushes' were, of course, Hiroshige and Kunisada, who worked on this series of 53 prints from 1854 through 1857. Hiroshige and Kunisada were close companions and had worked together on various single sheet compositions before. Kunisada in fact was chosen to make Hiroshige's memorial portrait woodcut upon his death in 1858.
For each print in this spectacular series, Hiroshige created the landscapes and Kunisada designed the figures in the foreground. This original woodcut is #31 of the series and deals with the station of Maisaka. In the background Hiroshige has depicted a beautiful view of Hamanako Lagoon. The landscape is typical of Hiroshige's late, lyrical genius.
In the foreground, Kunisada has depicted a grouping of three 'Biwa-Hoshi'. These were blind minstrels who made their livings by playing the stringed instrument known as the biwa. As one can see in this original woodcut, Kunisada was a master of figure studies. The strength of this woodcut and of the entire series is therefore the greatest talents of two famous artists were used to their fullest.

Condition: | Printed upon mid nineteenth century Japanese mulberry (rice) paper and with full margins as published by Maruya Kishuro between 1854 and 1857 for the series: Sohitsu gojusan tsugi (The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido by two Brushes). Slight soiling and thinning to the paper is apparent, particularly in the margins. The right-hand margin also contains a small tear, which does not intrude into the actual image. Else this is a very good impression bearing all the vibrant colours and fine lines of an early printing. Biwa-Hoshi on the Tokaido Road Near Maisaka is simply a spectacular, original example of the art of Utagawa Kunisada I (Toyokuni III) and the famous landscape art of Utagawa Hiroshige I. |
