Hiroshige III (Shigemasa): After
the 1858 death of Hiroshige, that great genius of landscape woodcuts,
his leading pupil (and adopted son), Shigenobu (Japan, 1826 - 1869), married his
master's daughter and took the title of Hiroshige II. In 1865 Hiroshige
II divorced his wife and moved to Yokohama, working under the artistic
name of 'Ryushu'. Shigemasa, another pupil of Hiroshige, quickly took advantage
of the situation and assumed the title of Hiroshige III by marrying the
divorced daughter. |
|
Unlike either Hiroshige or Hiroshige II, Hiroshige III did
not dedicate his art mostly to landscape depictions and the study of nature.
He inherited his title at approximately the same time as the beginning
of the Meiji era which ushered in sweeping changes, mostly caused by the
opening of Japan to the West. He thus directed much of his attention to
the modernization and industrialization of his nation. Woodcuts portraying
Western style buildings and modern methods of transportation are often
seen in his oeuvre. |
